This is a fascinating and brave work- fascinating because of the subject matter and brave because it goes where others have either ignored or have feared to tread. The work certainly is not for those who desire a warm and fuzzy view of the American presidency. But it most definitely is for those who are willing to see the presidency as a vibrant human endeavor, filled with human flaws and human triumphs. This is clearly a must read for the serious student of the American presidency. One only wishes that it continued beyond Bill Clinton. But to have done so would have been untrue to Professor Leuchtenburg's purpose. He is telling us that serious studies of the presidency can only be undertaken after a suitable passage of time, and we are not there yet for George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He will take us there if time allows him to do so. We can all hope that it shall. If not, we can always treasure this masterful work.

Leuchtenberg, to enhance the book's readability, omitted footnotes. Unfortunately, when he jettisoned the discipline of documenting sources, he issued himself a license to vent his spleen. To justify his often biased observations, Leuchtenburg, throughout the book, repeatedly resorts to citing mythical analysts. His attempt is to convince the reader that he is simply summarizing what many informed "analysts" conclude. however, because there are no footnotes, the hapless reader must simply take Leuchtenberg's word for it.

This practice of citing unnamed analysts reaches a crescendo in Leuchtenburg's analysis of Gore's loss to Bush in the 2000 Presidential election. Leuchtenburg tries to make the case that Bush stole the election by citing Justice Steven's dissent. Then he adds that "numbers of analysts echoed Stevens." Who are these legions of analysts that agree with Stevens? Leuchtenburg belatedly mentions several others who disagreed with the Court's decision. But, his larger intent falls flat: i.e., to make the case that multitudes of impartial analysts disagreed with the Court.

This end-of-career book ends up being a pale reflection of Leuchtenburg's earlier, more rigorous work. No doubt, in writing it the author feels better because he was able to speak his mind. But, speaking one's mind seldom results in good scholarship.

This book is interesting because it provides a readable narrative of each American President from Theodore Roosevelt to William Clinton. This book is not intended to be an in depth, scholarly exegesis of these presidential terms but rather a narrative that asks whether each particular president was successful or unsuccessful and why.

This is simply an extraordinary book. Leuchtenburg is both a master at presidential history and at storytelling;. His writing is historically sound but not like your father's history books, rich in facts woven with the texture one might expect from a novelist, interspaced with telling anecdotes and observation. Grand stories of the evolution of the presidency, differences in leadership and how personal character affects the leadership of those in the office.

I've always been fascinated by the American presidency. When I was very young, I tried to write a story wherein the protaginist was POTUS. I didn't know enough to really flesh out a character...this book is the most concise volume I've read in fifty-plus years...I'm on the Reagan section now, and it's very revealing. I hope this book goes down in history as one of the greats.

This marvelous history of the American presidents, from Teddy Roosevelt at the dawn of the 20th century to Bill Clinton, as the century ended, is an achievement of the first order. Professor Leuchtenburg presents the presidents, one by one, outlines their major achievements, discusses their failures, and gives the reader a sense of the inner life of these national leaders. They range from the exuberant personalities and accomplishments of the two Roosevelts, the compelling talents of Truman, Kennedy and Johnson, the disappointing records of Wilson, Clinton and the Bushes, father and son, and the non-entities that led the nation during the 1920’s.

In any history of more than 800 pages, there must be judgments that are contestable; this history is no exception. But the broad sketches of these men seem largely on the mark.
