This is a fine update of an excellent Catholic Study Bible. The text is the New American Bible Revised Edition. It is the latest amendment to the NAB since 1991 and contains the first update of the Old Testament since 1970, including a complete revision of the Psalms.

Some reviews of previous editions of this Study Bible have claimed that, among other things, the NAB is a "bad translation with a bad agenda". One reviewer stated that the study notes for the Gospel of John, chapter 6 contain a "denial of the Real Presence" which I find nothing short of astounding. In fact the note for John 6:35-59 states "Up to John 6:50 "bread of life" is a figure for God's revelation in Jesus; in John 6:51-58, the EUCHARISTIC THEME COMES TO THE FORE." (capitalization is mine).

The notes go on to state about John 6:63: "Spirit . . . flesh: probably not a reference to the eucharistic body of Jesus but to the supernatural and the natural, as in ' John 3:6. Spirit and life: all Jesus said about the bread of life is the revelation of the Spirit."

These notes agree with the notes from the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible authored by Scott Hahn, a decidedly conservative Catholic scholar, so I really don't understand the reviewer's objections.

John's Gospel is full of the High Christology of the Eucharist but the Gospel does NOT contain the Last Supper discourses found in Matthew, Mark and Luke in which Christ ACTUALLY INSTITUTES the Eucharist. In those passages (beginning with Mt 26:26, Mk 14:22, and Lk 22:17) the notes in this study Bible specifically state that the bread and wine are Jesus' body and blood. I can find NO DENIAL OF THE REAL PRESENCE in any notes within this Study Bible.

Great asset for Bible Study. The only negatives for me were the thin see through pages and small printing. I heartily recommend this for anyone taking a Bible Study class. I found the summaries for every book in the Bible which are at the front of this book very enlightening and interesting.

Excellent. I really like how one Reading Guide explains who wrote this chapter and what society and the problems encountered espired the writings of each book. It really is a study of Jewish history and it's progression into the New Testement. Maps and charts clarify things so well.

As a former Protestant I have struggled to find a solid Catholic study bible. I am pleased to say my search has ended. The books have ample study materials both in the front of the book and within the books themselves. I am confused about the one poor review stating this is not a study bible. I consider myself to be an intermediate to advanced student of the word and have found this bible to contain an excellent overview and study of individual verses and chapters. Disregard that reviewer. The only improvement I would suggest is perhaps sturdier paper.

Buy this wonderful Bible! It won"t disappoint you.

I like the content in this study bible a lot. The Readers Guide in the beginning of the book is not quite as scholarly as the RG in the NAB Catholic Study Bible from 1990, which is a great study bible, but is big and heavy. This is the paperback edition of the Personal Study Edition. It's lighter yes, but the cover is very flimsy and the pages very thin. It does have some great features though. The study guide has an "At a Glance" section which guides you to, "Who are the major characters?" "What should I look for?" "Why was this book written?" and "What is the story?" (Themes) These guides are helpful. In addition there are copious notes on almost every page explaining phrases in the text, maps and many cross-reference foot-notes. If he pages were a little heavier weight and the cover a little more substantial I wold really love this bible. It's still a good reference especially for beginners, but it's not an "elementary" version at all. I'd say college level.

This bible is the one I've been looking for since converting to Catholicism from the Southern Baptist tradition in 2009. I wrestled for years with which translation to settle on for a Catholic bible, and I finally decided on the NABRE since the RSV isn't available in a format that I need or want - I'm sorry, Ignatius Press; I love your books, but I simply can't wait around 10 more years for the full version of your study bible to be completed (and the cover is awful, which is neither here nor there...). I wish this bible was true leather, as opposed to bonded, and that there were more ribbons so that I could use this bible to quickly flip to the readings in mass; that's pretty much it as far as any "complaints" are concerned. I'm very happy with the size, feel, and heft, and the Reading Guide is superb. Thanks to Oxford Press for a much-needed bible; I'm so glad to finally have a Catholic version of the bible that I can use and am not embarrassed to be seen with (I'm pointing at you, Catholic Book Publishing Corporation).

If you are serious about understanding the historical context of the Bible, this is the version for you. With extensive annotations and notes amounting to textual exegesis, the scholarship behind this version of the Christian Bible is unbeatable. I used this text in writing my current publication on bible bullies, and found that it gave me insight into the early Church's reasoning behind their choices in selecting scrolls to include in the Bible. Further, when reading about how translators wrestled with Paul's syntactic style and how to smooth out his inconsistencies to make sense of some of his writing, one begins to understand the unique personalities of the actual writers of the scrolls chosen for the Bible and how anyone insisting on the "hand of God" having written it is no student of the Bible.
