The Children's Crusade is one of those events in history that has spawned so much legend and myth about itself that the historical kernel is hard to find. Gary Dickson carefully brings it forth, revealing along the way, numerous fascinating aspects of early medieval society.

Furthermore, Dickson tracks the evolution of the legend about the Children's Crusade, an equally interesting story.

This is not popular history and I wouldn't recommend it to non-academic types, but I found it very interesting. I hadn't realized that so little is known about the Children's Crusade -- everything I thought I knew has never been verified and may very well be made up. The author is an excellent historiographer and myth buster.

This is a well thought out and researched book. I used this for a thesis that I wrote on the Children's Crusade. Though I think many of the numbers are highly exaggerated that is probably due to the original accounts told. The author does a good job sorting through the legend and the facts, though this is only one interpretation of the event. This is a worthwhile read for any academic looking to further their knowledge on the subject and possibly also for the well read armchair historian looking for the true story of the event that probably inspired the story of the Pied Piper.
