I have read the Canterbury tales previously, but with this book whole new dimensions have opened up (e.g. the use of Northern ME in the Reeve's Tale). This book provides both a historical and (especially) linguistic discussion of Chaucer and his times in England, with particular reference to the Canterbury Tales. Horobin obviously has much to say and so many points come out as almost incidental examples. As such, this book will bring more with additional readings. However, as this is an interesting and fun book, this is not a burdensome task.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has already read the Canterbury Tales and would like to get more out of it, but does not want to delve in ME studies proper.

I am to the point that I can read and pronounce Chaucer’s English, and generally understand it. Reaching this point turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. I got some CDs of professional actors reading the text. I rigged up a system on the computer so that for each line I would pronounce the line, then press the spacebar on the computer to listen to the actor’s pronunciation, pause the sound on the computer and then pronounce the line a second time. Then on to next line, etc.

But although I got the sense of the meaning I was unable to untangle the subtleties without knowing the grammar.

I thus read this book with great enjoyment. It is easy to read, and has a nice balance between the essential and the arcane. But the Table of Abbreviations is incomplete, so that often I could not make out where a quotation was from. Also, the Kindle edition is poorly edited, especially in the quotations. I kept reporting “content errors” to the point that I thought I should be getting paid for editing. Towards the end of the book, the errors increased, indicating a carelessness due to a deadline.

The printed book, however, was accurate.
