"The Exposure Field Guide" is a pocket-size guide to exposure for digital SLRs by prolific author of digital photography books Michael Freeman. It's about 6.25 x 4.75 x 0.5 inches in size, suitable for tucking into a camera bag. But whether you will be able to read it in the field is another matter. The font is very small, and the font for the captions, where the exposure is explained, is even smaller. Freeman is trying to present a practical method for determining exposure quickly in the field, "a distillation of the ways in which many professionals make exposure decisions." He presents his ideas in 5 sections: Fast-track & Foolproof, Technical, The Twelve, Style, and Post-Processing.

The bulk of the information about exposure is in the sections entitled "The Twelve" and "Style", though you need to read the first section and commit his chart on "brightness" to memory in order to understand the exposure system that he presents in the subsequent sections. This book is aimed at digital photographers, as evidenced by the references to clipping, histograms, review and reshoot, and the prominence of post-processing. Sometimes Freeman points out the differences between digital capture and film, and this book could be used as a reference for film photography in a pinch, but I wouldn't recommend that for reasons I will explain below.

The "Technical" section explains some of the issues particular to digital cameras, such as how digital sensors work, digital noise, highlight clipping, dynamic range, as well as some exposure issues common to film and digital photography. "The Twelve" is considered by the author to be the heart of the book. In it, he presents 12 exposure situations divided into 3 groups: range fits, low range, and high range.

Unlike Michael Freeman's other "field guide," The DSLR Field Guide: The essential guide to getting the most from your camera, The Exposure Field Guide takes a much less broad spectrum of a subject and tries to drill it down into simple information. Unfortunately the "field guide" format is more of a detriment to Mr. Freeman's books as it does not work as a quick reference guide. The topics covered in the Exposure Field Guide read more like a full-fledged how-to on how DSLR exposure works in the real world. So if we're going to treat it as a full-fledged book instead of a field guide, how does it measure up?

Well the information provided is rather textbook; going over subjects as basic as metering, the histogram, and other general terms dealing with light in photography. However since the book is 'shortened' by the Field Guide format, Freeman's other book Perfect Exposure: The Professional's Guide to Capturing Perfect Digital Photographs is actually a better option as it contains the fully fleshed-out explanations and examples. However neither one of these books compares to the reference standard which is Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera.

Short version: Skip Michael Freeman's "Field Guide" books - if you like the author's writing style check out his full-sized books instead.

Michael Freeman's The Exposure Field Guide appears to be a slightly abridged miniature version of his book, Michael Freeman's Perfect Exposure: The Professional's Guide to Capturing Perfect Digital Photographs. I assume this on the basis of comparing the content of a physical copy of Field Guide to the digital content viewable in Amazon's "Look Inside" feature for Perfect Exposure.

The content is excellent, though speaking as a amateur photographer, I find Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera more user friendly. Peterson is the author of Understanding Exposure, material from which is reprinted in Bryan Peterson's Understanding Photography Field Guide.

The diminutive size of Freeman's Exposure Field Guide (approximately 6 1/8 x 4 5/8 inches) does make it more convenient to carry into the field than Peterson's larger field guide (approximately 6" x 9"), but as other reviewers note, the print in Freeman's book is painfully small (the print that accompanies the many images in the book is the size of the finest fine print you'll encounter in the literature that accompanies over the counter pharmeceuticals, and the rest of the print in the book is reminiscent of the size of the fine print on grocery products).
