Meticulous research by Quaife yields the definitive account of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Very little information has been added to his classic account in the past 50 years, although historians have tried desperately to find new information on the subject. Quaife also gives a picture of the history of the entire region surrounding Chicago. African-American historians may be interested in his detailed biography of DuSable.

Format: Paperback
As an active historian of early Chicago, I have used this book to organize my own archival research. In the century since Quaife wrote this book, much new material has become accessible.

As the biographer of Jean Baptiste Poit de

Sable and John Kinzie, I would point out that there are documents that require a reinterpretation of the lives of these important people. They were both more important and more interesting than Quaife knew. His accounts of both men are seriously deficient in light of the documentation that has been found in the last few years.
