The Holocaust was/is one of the most horrifying events in history. It was not--as so many previous atrocities have been-- the "child" of ignorance, superstition , famine, or plague, but the planned, calculated, organized program of a highly educated and sophisticated nation. Probst examines the participation of preachers and professors of theology who endorsed and supported the Nazis in their anti-Semitic savagery. A courageous and essential book.

I could not finish this book. That is very unusual for me. The author has failed to give any reason for Luther's anti-Semitic views. I mostly read short historical biographies about Lutheran ministers that had some views on the Jewish people through their seminary upbringings or maybe no views..... Maybe the reason Luther was an anti-Semite was because he viewed them as the murderers of Christ and believed that they were not anymore the "chosen" people of God. Luther did not want the book of Revelation included in the Bible as well as the book of James. I already knew all of this before I opened this book. If you want any concrete reasons that Luther and later Lutheranism aided Hitler in his viscious anti-semitic views on the Jews or why there was not more opposition from the Lutheran church in Germany during WW2, do not expect to find any answers in this book.
