Snorri, an often unscrupulous (and very successful) politician who lived in the real world, was also a very learned man. He was arguably the greatest historian of medieval Europe, and in his methods he has often been compared to Thucydides. "Heimskringla" means "the world is round" -- appropriate for a people who considered the entire world their arena -- and is the overall title given to his collection of earlier sagas, rationalized and pruned of recognizable nonsense, which is still the basis of history in the North. Snorri's style is simplicity itself and because "history" until very recently concerned itself with the actions of great men, he spends considerable time detailing the interrelationships among the many leaders of Scandinavia -- and especially of Harald "Fairhair," who conquered and united the many domains of those leaders. (Why "Fairhair"? Read the saga.) The roots of William the Conqueror are here, as well as those of Canute and St. Olaf. This simply-illustrated edition noted above runs to nearly 900 pages and is generally regarded as the best, but any will do. This is history, literature, genealogy, and mythology, and should be read by anyone with a serious interest in medieval history.

Don't be afraid to start this very, very long book. You can skip around and read the exciting histories of the kings of Norway. I loved the tale of how Norway's "1st King" Harald Fairhair conquered the kingdom for the sake of a gal he liked. The sections on St. Olaf are good too. Happy reading!

If you are a student of the Vikings then you have to read Heimskringla. This version was MUCH better than another I had previously purchased on here, and was complete with liner notes, alternate translations, and a very good introduction!!! I learned more about the Vikings reading this one book than I did in all of my School years, and being written in "their own words" really adds a new slant to history and some of their old tales.

This is first hand history of Northern Europe, which is only briefly covered in most American schools. This is a thousand year our writings describing the activities of Vikings and early royalty in northern Europe

I haven't been able to read it all yet, but appears a very interesting read. I know scholars have written this book off saying it's not completely accurate and a lot of the sagas are fiction, but much of it appears to have historical facts. It seems this is the best starting point for those exploring Viking history. All the VIking books I've read reference THIS book like it's the bible of Viking history.

This is perhaps the very best of all the books I have ever read on the Viking conquests.
It is complete with drawings to stir the imagination and fill in the picture.
Snorre Sturelson certainly got his details right and provided a smooth transition from king to king.

I think any reader will be glad to read the conquests of Saint King Olav and his many travels.
I had read this book prior to my very first visit to Norway, hence my visit to the Viking ship museum was more meaningful....to think the span of centuries in a book was right beneath my fingertips in the museum.

I really recommend this book for it's detail, accuracy and the gaps it fills in all my imaginations of that era of history. The Vikings were certainly a vigorous manly force as frightful as they were courageous.

This is a good version of Heimskringla, because it includes Snorri's Ynglinga Saga. The Ynglinga Saga contains important information about Odin and the 12 Norse Gods. They are like a Turk version of the 12 Tribes of Israel, or Jesus and 12 Disciples. Thus, make a note that the Ynglinga Saga is important.

There are versions of Heimskringla that don't include the Ynglinga Saga.

This was a gem find. Looks like it had been checked out once and the reader made it through half the intro before giving up. This is a required read for anyone interested in Norse history.
