Garry Marshall book "My Happy Days in Hollywood" is a great memoir. I have not finished the book yet (20/30 pages left to go), but I had to write a review to this fun, entertaining, memoir of a TV great writer/director. Fans of T.V. shows, like The Odd Couple, Happy Days, and Laverne and Shirley, and Mork and Mindy, will enjoy reading about what happens behind the scenes of these TV shows. I sure did. Garry Marshall writes about the friction (and cursing) among Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams on the Laverne and Shirley set. He also writes that the Happy Days set was the most enjoyable, and also the easiest people to work with and how everybody got along, on the Happy Days set.
He also writes about the movies he has directed and produced as well. Flamingo Kid, Pretty Woman, Dear God, etc. What fun this book is. This book is going to be a permanent part of my book library. I have enjoyed reading this book very much, and cannot put it down.

At the end of reading this book I was wishing Garry Marshall was my dad! What a nice, thoughtful, funny, talented man. All round pleasant read about his life story, his career, family and colleagues.

This book is full of inspiring life lessons. Mr. Marshall and his family enjoy life even when it throws them curveballs. While that statement reads like a self-help book review, this book is even better! It is a real world success and LOVE story that should be used as a self-help guide.

Going to meet Mr. Marshall at a book signing tonight. Wonder how he will sign my Kindle edition...

Garry Marshall is one of the more prolific writers/producers/directors Hollywood has ever seen. This guy has literally done it all and has worked with a tremendous amount of "A-listers" in the business.

His book takes us back to how he started while in the military...thru his "Golden Years" of TV with "The Odd Couple", "Happy Days", "Laverne and Shirley" and "Mork & Mindy". Then a plethora of hit and not so hit romantic comedy movies...of which his crowning glory was "Pretty Woman".

Marshall also writes about his relationships with his family most notably his sister, Penny Marshall, the Laverne of "Laverne and Shirley"...a writer, producer and director in her own right.

Good memoir..great read!

This wonderful memoir overflows with Mr. Marshall's humor, optimism, and good will. There's a chapter devoted to nearly every project he's ever worked on, which means there is something for everyone, no matter what movie or TV show of his is your personal favorite. I highly recommend the audiobook version!

Garry Marshall’s autobiography is a delight – from his stories of growing up as sickly child in the Bronx to his desires to be a writer, his college days at Northwestern, and his Army service. And you can’t leave out his tap-dancing mom, his business travelling dad, and sisters Ronny and Penny. He began his professional writing career with Joey Bishop and worked with folks like Danny Thomas, Sheldon Leonard, and Lucille Ball. During this time he worked with both difficult and easy to work with people and I think, found that being easy to work with is the way to go. Based on advice from Sheldon Leonard, he worked his way into producing/directing The Odd Couple, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and Mork and Mindy, among others. It was interesting to read how the mix of people got along and what shows were headaches and what shows made going to work fun. (I won’t give it away). He then turned to directing films with hits and not-so-hits like The Flamingo Kid, Nothing in Common, Beaches, Pretty Women, Runaway Bride, The Princess Diaries, and so on. Again, his work ethic of trying to make things pleasant for everyone impressed me. It is a difficult business but if you can make it fun, it’s a plus, for everyone involved. It’s too bad not everyone has this up-beat attitude. And yes, Marshall did not always have good days. He encountered cancer and hip replacement surgery later in life but is still looking forward to each and every day. I could not believe folks saying they were irritated by his references to being a dad or that people grow up and away from Happy Days. I think if we had more people writing/directing/producing films of the family quality of Garry Marshall, we as a society would be in better shape today. I really enjoyed this book and some of the antidotes are hilarious.

Garry Marshall is nothing short of being an American Institution. Whether he has the mythical "Midas Touch" is a question I asked myself as I read the astonishing list of credits that he has given the world.

Imagine being associated (even if only for a few episodes) with a cast that includes: Joey Bishop, Danny Thomas, Dick Van Dyke; Lucille Ball. And that is only in the first 100 pages!

It seems that television, especially from the fifties up through the late eighties, could not have survived without Mr. Marshall and his magic touch. His hard work, intelligence and dedication to the arts is evident with his amazing roster of hit shows as well as the way he chose to write this book.

Anyone could have used the array of "big names" as fodder for elicting tons of gossip and more than just a hint of scandal. But, like with the scripts he wrote and the shows he produced, Garry Marshall rises above it. You read about the Hollywood Television Legends and get an accurate picture of them. He spells out the facts simply without passing judgment on them or placing either a halo or horns upon the idols. This has to be applauded, loudly, especially when it comes to discussing his sister, LAVERN AND SHIRLEY star Penny Marshall.

Mildly, but always writing as if shrugging his shoulders a bit, he talks about the problems of becoming a star too quickly. You might not like what Garry Marshall has to say about Cindy Williams or Penny Marshall or the stars of THE ODD COUPLE as he doesn't bother to play God and forgive them their sins, or temper tantrums. But he also does not take aim at them and try to shoot them down. The vast array of talented men and women he worked with have talent, intelligence and a few quirks.
