4.0 out of 5 stars Oh the Soviet Union....., March 3, 2004
Well, first off, it's a great book. I only recommend if you're "really" into the Cold War and the powers of the Soviet Union. This book mostly discusses the Soviet Union's capabalities and there strategic missiles. In the beginning around page 25, it mentions how Cuba was used as a,"satellite" by the U.S.S.R. Although this book mostly refers the the Soviet Union's powers, it also discusses countries that were somehow affiliated with the Soviet Union such as Vietnam, China including former republics such as Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, George and invaded countries such as Poland. Towards the end around page 180, it discusses the types of combat aircraft that the U.S.S.R had at the time. Such combat aircraft include the MIG 29, MIG 26 and various other combat aircraft which now, many have been acquired by many countries since Russia has now become a military supplier. The U.S.S.R as well had strategic missiles designed to hit certain targets specifically, missile silos and various military installations. But in this book it does mention how the U.S had its' ICBM's set to destroy cities or where there was more population. This book does not go into the collapse of the U.S.S.R for the book was written in the midst of its final years or early years of the Reagan presidency. The book was,"ok" yet I was hoping I would of obtained a clearer understanding of why this whole "kalamaty" started. It did give a brief setting upon why the cold war started as a result of change in government but this book mostly discusses plans the Soviet Union had in the event of attacks, their air force and countries they had or aided during this time in history. It's worth reading for it's not a very long book. It took me 2 days to read it. But like I said in the beginning, it's only worth reading if you're really into finding out the Soviet power and their affiliations with other countries for that's what I got out of it.
