Love rhyme and rhythm? Get a bang out of cleverly pictured animals? Then you'll love Hogwash! by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Jim McMullan. This story is about a farmer who wants to include his hogs in his spring cleaning. Of course, hogs don't care for cleaning of any kind so the farmer and his hogs are placed in a push-pull relationship that delighted my 10 year old son and me.

I always enjoy a story told in rhyme so I suspected I would enjoy this book, but as we began reading, the rhythm of the text really delighted me; making this a great choice as a read aloud.

Recognizing this story as a "read aloud" of course triggers my teacher brain to kick into high gear. When my teacher brain got involved, I realized there were tons of teaching points embedded in this text. For example, the vocabulary- "pondered", "crafty smile","dust plane", "ammunition" would spark discussion among a class of young readers, or even between a parent and a child. Of course, a mini lesson on onomatopoeia would be a natural for this book as the farmer's plane crashes into the pig's sty. To bring in the older elementary child, a focus on the word play used by the author would surely delight. "He splished and splashed and hammed it up..." writes the author of the farmer when he is engaged with the hogs in the sty.

An entertaining read for sure, but just as entertaining are the pictures. The animals in this book have personality which comes through loud and clear in their facial expressions and body language. Just when you don't expect it, the illustrator adds an element to the pictures that makes you do a double-take. For example, in the opening scene of the farm, the illustrator places one pig resting in the corner of the sty while all the others are active. I'll challenge you to find the bucking donkey and the mouse who has no tolerance for the muck!

Both my mom-side and my teacher-brain recommend this book for pure enjoyment and some great lessons too!

It's spring, and therefore it's time to clean the animals on the farm but things go awry when Farmer gets to his pigs; they refuse to take a bath! Hilarious attempts by the farmer to wash the pigs fail miserably, and his best chance to wash his hogs turns into a muddy mess of fun for everyone. Farmer eventually learns that pigs just prefer to be muddy and that maybe a bit of mud is good for everyone, himself included.

When I read this to a group of preschoolers, they loved it when they were prompted to make oinks and pig snorts when the pigs were in full on rebellion. There were giggles of delight when the plane crashed into the pig pen, and everyone liked the ending where the Farmer ends up enjoying the mud with the pigs.

While I think that overall this is a really nice book, some of the rhymes didn't totally work and were a little clunky to read along. If you're going to perform this book, I would suggest reading through the book aloud by yourself a few times before you read it to a group. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the facial expressions on the pigs and Farmer are awesome. The plot is very cute, and I love how the crop duster was incorporated. I had one little boy who was quite ecstatic about said crop duster and wanted to talk about planes for a long time after the story was done. It's a great book for a unit on farms or farm animals!

I love Karma Wilson's "Bear" books ("Bear Snores On", "Bear's New Friend", etc.). She has a great grasp of rhyme and meter, and her plots tend to be sweet, which makes for some wonderful books that don't kill me to read over and over and over.

I had high hopes for this story, but I really don't like the message of the pigs first ignoring the farmer when told it was bath time and then actively fighting against getting a bath until the farmer breaks down and rolls in the mud with them. I don't need to teach my kids any lessons in not listening to me.

When Farmer decides to give all of his animals a bath, the pigs stand up and revolt, barricading themselves in their pen. Farmer tries over and over to give the pigs a bath, only to end up falling into their mud. All the animals come out to play in the mud, and Farmer finally gives up on carrying out hog wash. Children ages 3-6 will like the silly sensibility of this picture book.

We love Karma Wilson! This isn't our family's favorite, but it was enjoyed. I am picky when it comes to books for my kids and the fact that the "disobedient" pigs got their way kind of bugged me - but overall a very fun book.

Bought this book for a baby shower from their Wish List, and watched the little mom's eyes light up when she opened this gift. I love children's poetry when done well and this one is cute, cute. Farmer is determined to wash his animals and the pigs outsmart him. Even crop-dusting with soapy water doesn't succeed. I cringed a little with the pic of Farmer wallowing in the pig's mud (if you're familiar at all with real farm-life you'll know why!) But it's good, innocent fun. Read it aloud with your best "country-twang" and try to stop chuckling when you do!

The whole family loves Karma Wilson's Bear Snores On series, and stumbling on this book at the library was a score too. My one and three year old love this book. It's funny and is easy for the grownups to read. Highly recommend this one.
