I hesitated in my decision to buy this book (but I'm glad I did, read on...). Shooting football and the Olympics are not (to put it mildly) something I do regularly. I am also not a sports fan of the type that might have purchased this book because of my interest in team sports or the Olympics etc. I do shoot portraits but only about 43 of the 260+ pages of this book are specifically devoted to that. They're not a bad 43 pages but if all you are interested in is learning more about portrait photography then this is probably not the book for you. I was hoping when I purchased this book that some of the insights Peter would share about his approach to sports photography would be ones I might use in other types of photography (i.e. photographing other sports or events etc). In the end I am very happy that I decided to buy this book.

Peter shares with us, in an in-depth manner and and with great photos to illustrate his points, his approach to shooting sports (particularly football). Even if you have no expectation of shooting NFL football, his discussion both from a technical and esthetic point of view as to why he does what he does the way he does it is educational.

While this book would be GREAT for someone who specifically was interested in shooting football and certain other sports, it is also educational for photographers interested in how very accomplished photographers do what they do and why they do it that way. It is also be highly recommended for those interested in the profession of sports photography.

I don't know what Peter charges when he formally teaches about sports photography but this book must be a huge bargain compared to that.

This book is full of great content for all levels of sports photographers. Peter is one of the best football photographers and his knowledge of how to shoot the game is incredible. The book details his thoughts on what you should look for and where the best shots come from during a game. With his experience he has examples of why some methods are better then others. He details gear and tips on what you should bring for ames at all levels. The book details football, olympics and his sports portraits. The Sports Portraits section is insightful and be explains his process and what he is trying to get out of the photos. The photography throughout the book is great and supports the text with examples and detailed information on what his settings were. Great book for anyone interested in getting better at sports photography.

A few years ago, my daughter became a high school cheerleader and I found myself spending way too much time at football games. The lighting at these events was horrific and no one was getting usable shots. I started researching sports photography and came across a sports website where Peter Miller was talking about the camera equipment he was using and the settings he used with that equipment. I did two things after that. I spent way too much money on a Canon 1D Mark IV and a 70-200mm II lens and then I signed up for one of his Colorado sports photography week long workshops. To say I knew absolutely nothing about this art form would be an understatement. However, after utilizing his recommended camera setup and shooting with him for a week, I was getting remarkable shots myself and my sports photography addiction was in full swing. Over the last few years, I have shot hundreds of thousands of high school football, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer and everything in between with fantastic results all with his equipment settings and the shooting techniques he instilled in me.

Peter Miller is an icon in sports photography and will forever be linked with Sports Illustrated. You will be blown away with the events this man has photographed from memorable super bowls to the Olympic games. Oh, and by the way, we're not talking about one or two Super Bowls and Olympics but many, many, many Super Bowls and Olympics. The athletes he has had the pleasure of shooting and the magical moments he has witnessed is jaw dropping. All of the great shots, stories and how he got those great shots is in this book. Sports photographers will love this but portrait shooters will as well. Highly recommended!

Touchdown! What a great blend of art and information A lifes work at Sports Illustrated eloquently and diligently explained. Great photos catching the essence of the games with commentary on the story behind the pictures as well as how the pictures were taken and my favorite, the metadata available for the shots when not shot analogue. The pictures could stand on their own and the information could stand alone also but gently marinating the two adds out of this world flavor. I have read G Newman Lowrances book and have Neil Leifers coffee table style pictorial, both great books. I just like the style in which this was written, simple tricks like using a trash-bag to cover your camera in the rain yet sprinkled with technical information when appropriate. I am a mid-level sports shooter that shoots a top #25
D-1 college level football team and shot a couple NFL games as well as portraits, weddings, dance studios, and rodeos and local fairs. Can't say enough about this book. I am picking up little tricks and ideas in each section. I am telling all my photo buddies about this book, if nothing else it gives you pause to think about what you are doing when you go shoot a job. Keep clicking!
