My 5 year old is a good reader but he is young. This series is great because it provides loads of science but it's not too hard. The pages are broken up with pictures, sections, captions but the text is readable and follows a semblance of a narrative. There are many science books you can select for a young reader but some are plagued with small font, some have vocabulary that is too hard, some lack appealing pictures or are simply too much.

Dr. Seuss's Learning Library hits the right note for a kinder/first grader that loves science. I have not found a dud yet in the series and we own 11 of the books including this one, I can name 50 trees today.

On a final note, I like how Dr. Suess was able to make the topic of trees interesting to a child.

This book is fun for me as an adult (and a horticulture nut)however it can be a bit hard to follow. It references several names of trees that are all over the world. It almost needs more focus on certain areas so it contains maples, oaks and elms or tropical or deciduous or fruit. I bought it for my 7 yr old niece and it is hard to relate since she's never heard of several of the trees in it. I like the seeds and bugs learning library books very much and would recommend them over this for kids.

This Dr. Seuss book really makes learning fun! I enjoy, as a parent, that's it full of info and really stimulates parent and child. Sure there's a lot of info presented but if it's too much for your child at their age, just read the text and avoided the extra notes. My son, 5, loved this book! There's a lot of dull kid books out there that are a bore to read. I enjoyed all the visual comparisons like on page 18 where the boy's holding the sweet gum leaf and comparing it's shape to a star, and on page 10 where The Cat in the Hat is comparing the shape of an umbrella to the American Elm tree.

On a side note, I'd like to say "it's just a kid's tree book", let's all calm down about 'evolutionary propaganda'. You can have your views, but if you want plain text on botany without any cute drawings, that your child will find completely boring, I suggest you take out a science textbook or a tree guide. If you want something that the child is going to enjoy visually, I suggest you get this book and ignore what you don't like and don't read it to the child.

Awesome book for starting to teach youngsters about trees and identifying them by the bark and leaves. My boys love this book! A little wordy, but I try and read a few pages a night to them so it's not overwhelming as they are 2 and 4. For a 6 year old it could be read all the way through probably.
