Victor Villasenor wrote one of the premier literary works in the entire area of Mexican American Literature when he wrote Rain of Gold (Lluvia de Oro). It is a rare piece of art that can be appreciated by Mexican Americans such as myself or those from other cultures such as my Anglo wife. We felt like together we made the journey with Lupe.
While some works like Tomas Rivera's ...Y No Se Lo Trago La Tierra (...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him) can be almost a caricature of Mexican American culture, this book by Villasenor has fully rounded and developed characters that the reader can appreciate, understand, and relate to on a personal level. It is truly a fantastic book.

I love Villasenor's books. This is my favorite of his, due to wonderful rich family history, as well as the slice of history of the US and Mexico during this time period. This is a Spanish edition because it is gift for my friend who speaks only Spanish.

This book has added perspective to my own family's history. It was easy to become Lupe, to see Doña Margarita as my grandmother, and to feel the pain of the Revolution. My own family lived through the Mexican Revolution and thanks to Victor Villaseñor's precise and heart-felt words, I was able to live through it too. If you are a Chicano, a lover of history, a teacher, a student, this book is for you.

This is a great story but the author wrote it in English. The translation into Spanish is not great (the translation of Trece Sentidos is much better). The Spanish translation leaves out much of the descriptive language.

I've read it in both English and Spanish and I recommend the English version over the Spanish translation (or course I always recommend reading in the original language if possible).

The book is the riveting true story of the author's parents and family history. The book traces the separate story of Villasenor's mother and father, weaving in the history of the Mexican Civil War around 1910. The book ends with the courtship and marriage of his parents.
I read most of this book in Spanish, with occassional reference to the English version. From the moment I picked it up (in Spanish) I found the story compelling.
Probably the most interesting aspect is the extreme hardship that the families go through in Mexico during the civil war, and how they struggle, with God's help, to survive and triumph despite multiple, unspeakable tragedies.
The book gives excellent insights to the history and culture of Mexico and Mexican-Americans. I am now in the process of re-reading it.
