Recently, I gave my 5 year old my old Kindle and loaded it with a few early readers. He went off with the thing and a few minutes later I heard him giggling to himself... and reading. Aloud. By himself. I've been teaching him to read, but this was the first time he had ever approached a book and read it independently. As a parent, that's basically the biggest thrill ever.

Absolutely wonderful book for starting readers! Of course, Rocket is such a loveable dog anyway! But there is just enough repetition and rhyming that it makes learning the words easy ond fun. I have a R.E.A.D. dog and we visit lots of schools, and this book is one that will always be in my bag!

A few weeks ago I was working at the Book Fair at my Kindergartener son's school. I had to buy this book so that I could justify buying the little Rocket dog that went with it.

This book (and Rocket) are adorable. My son can read this book pretty easily, so I didn't buy it as a challenge for him. I bought it because it is a fun book to read over and over again. And did I mention how adorable that Rocket dog is?

I love the Rocket series of books. The first book, How Rocket Learns to Read, is wonderful and fun book about Rocket and a little yellow bird who decides to be his teacher. Initially Rocket isn't interested so his teacher starts reading a story aloud about a dog who lost his bone. When the story leads to discovering a mound of dirt, Rocket wonders if it was the bone! The story starts from there and tells about Rocket's growing interest in words. The series continues with stories about Rocket's interest in words, reading and writing. Drop It, Rocket! is one of a number Step into Reading books that follow. I worked into the series backward. I'm a Reading Buddy to a 1st grader and Drop It, Rocket! is one book she chose to read. She enjoyed reading it so much that I checked further into the Rocket series on Amazon. How Rocket Learns to Read appears to be the first in the series and one you would read to a preschooler. I bought it to check it out. I loved it so much, I bought all the Rocket books and, after reading them all myself, mailed the entire set to her.

Perfect for Kindergarteners! Uses lots of sight words. Only a few "new" words per page. My son is just stared reading. This book makes him look like a pro! Great first step!
