Usually when you hear the line "I love you more," it's a response to "I love you." In Jennifer Murphy's "I Love You More," it's because Daddy has three wives.

The story is told mainly from the perspective of 12 year old Picasso Lane, who lives with her artist mother Diana and father Oliver. Picasso is a lover of words and an eavesdropper/snoop extraordinaire. And you have to be when you're a kid and no one is telling you anything.

So when, one fine day, Jewels shows up at the door to break the news to Diana that Jewels is wife #2, it's a shock to all and added information to Picasso's eavesdropped files. Then another wife appears. Not only are they all married to Oliver, but they all have children, or are carrying a child, by him.

As the wives get together and discuss, Picasso learns more and more, even following them to secret meeting spots... until she learns that the wives are planning to murder their sociopathic mutual spouse... which is how Picasso ends up at the summer beach house with dead Daddy on the floor.

But who dunnit? Where is the murder weapon? And what does Kyle Kennedy, the police detective on the case, really know?

Picasso's perceptions are illuminating, about herself. her mother, her father, life, and lies. While not childlike, they have an innocent feel to them. And as Picasso learns more about the lies that shape our lives, we watch the mystery unravel, tangle, unravel, and tangle.

As mysteries go, it's quietly philosophical, and in a gentle way, it draws the reader deeper and deeper into the lives of Oliver, and who he really loves more.

First of all - "I Love You More" has the best cover graphics ever. It is hard to write a review without giving away too much but I must say that this is a "page-turner." Such a perfect beach book! I was sitting on Nantucket, trying to resist reading the last chapter and I did - barely. I wanted the story to unfold in a way that would make me anxious for the ending yet I could still enjoy the vast array of divergent clues and tightly-woven characters and the compelling mystery. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more wonderful novels by this author. To paraphrase the title, "I Love it More."

This one hooks in the reader right away with its premise - Oliver has been murdered. And each of this three wives are suspect. Split between the collective viewpoint of his wives, his eldest daughter, Picasso, and the police investigator, Detective Kennedy, this is a literary mystery that unfolds in an engaging manner. The author takes a serious direction with the storyline (though Oliver balancing his three unknowing wives could easily fit into a more comical take, like the film Eulogy [HD]).

The bulk of the book comes from the precocious perspective of Picasso, Oliver's investigative eleven year old daughter. Her chapters feel authentically young with Picasso's penchant for words and her obsession with dictionaries. These are balanced with the more adult perspectives - Detective Kennedy's chapters are stronger with his immediate very personal interest in the case. The collective viewpoint of the wives isn't as strong as the others perhaps because of its uniqueness. Lumping all three women together makes them the least developed characters and it takes some getting to use to this collective view. But it's a fast-paced and very engaging read with an ending twist that is not wholly unexpected, but works well. There are a few lingering loose ends, but this does not detract from the book's overwhelmingly entertaining quality. This is a strong debut and I will be keeping an eye out for more books from this talented writer.

One man, three wives, the perfect murder. A scintillating novel of betrayal and conspiracy.

Picasso Lane is twelve years old when her father, Oliver, is murdered at their summer beach house. Her mother, Diana, is the primary suspect—until the police discover his second wife, and then his third. The women say they have never met—but Picasso knows otherwise. Picasso remembers the morning beautiful Jewels showed up at their house, carrying the same purse as her mother, and a family portrait featuring her father with two strange boys. Picasso remembers lifting the phone, listening to late night calls with Bert, a woman heavily pregnant with Oliver's fourth child. As the police circle and a detective named Kyle Kennedy becomes a regular fixture in their home, Picasso tries to make sense of her father's death, the depth of his deceit, and the secrets that bind these three women. Cunningly paced and plotted, I Love You More is a riveting novel of misplaced loyalty, jealousy, and revenge.

An unscrupulous husband’s murder produces many suspects in what is an absorbing debut. Revolving around the murder of lawyer Oliver Lane, who is found shot dead at his beach house on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. The victim's wife seems the likely suspect until two other women come forward claiming to be married to him, and that in turn makes the investigation go off in many unusual twists. It is up to Detective Kyle Kennedy to try and unravel the mystery of who killed Oliver. This is something that is made quite difficult due to lady's giving nothing away and the lack of evidence.

Aside from there similar haircuts and, in total support of each others innocence, they resolutely deny prior knowledge of the others’ existence, the three women are absolutely different.
