This book is a must for the casual and hard core fan of the game of baseball. The author has spent much time, energy and effort to research the rules and regs and breaks it down so everyone who reads this book will end up with a better understanding of the the game. A great read and reference to add to your collection! Major League Umpires should be required to carry one with them wherever they go....

The author has a great technique. He first describes a game situation that really took place sometime in the past. He then asks the reader to decide what the umpire should have decided. He then quotes the rule and tells the reader what the umpire actually decided. Sometimes, in his opinion, the umpire makes a mistake. Sometimes, rules are later changed to address unusual situations. The author will often suggest other scenarios and explain how they are impacted by the rule. A book about rules could be dry and boring. This one is informative, engaging and enjoyable.

So much interesting detail of plays that actually happened that baffle the players, managers and even some umpires. It gives you another view of the umpire's job: not only does he have to get the call right in a split second, but also has to get the call right based on complex rules.

I can't but believe reading the actual baseball rule book would be anything but tedious and unappealing unless one were a true baseball fanatic . . . but explaining various rules using actual game sitautions should be enjoyable for most fans of the game . . . from what I have learned so far, I know this is one text I'll be picking up time and again . . . well done!

For anyone who has played or coached the game and for every serious fan this is a great read. The historical real game situations are memorable--and as a boomer era fan I remember some of the exact situations as they arose in games I'd seen on TV or read about even decades ago. And 2 of the examples actually came up in a riot of controversy in my son's high school games this year. I am impressed by the research that went into this effort. Extensively indexed for reference. It will be on my bookshelf permanently.

Being on the road a lot I find the audio extremely entertaining. I tried listening to the "Rule Book" while driving and almost fell asleep! I have also found that if I read the rule book while listening to the audio everything makes more sense ------

I haven't read the book (yet), but I noticed something right away. The author states that "All opinions and conclusions expressed in the book are mine alone". He also thanks various people who helped him, but one person who didn't receive any acknowledgment (as far as I could tell) was Harry Simmons, the author of a 1960 book by the very same title, and organized in a very similar situation/question/answer format. The reason I noticed this right away is that I read that book when I was growing up in the 1960s.
