While the authors claim this book was written for patients and physicians I think this book is mainly written for health care professionals. Since 6 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder this book is an essential reference manual that could help to save lives. Not only does this book explain the details of treating each patient it gives alternatives to treatment like giving a patient Omega-3 fatty acids.

For most of the book there is in depth information about various case studies. At the start of the book the authors deal with the "phenomenological aspects of the longitudinal course of bipolar illness." They also give an overview of the general psychopharmacology. Doctors will find this book helpful because it deals with 60 case studies. While the generic name of the drugs used are prominent throughout the book, there is a list of the brand names in Appendix 1.

A few of the patients in this book wanted to go off their medication because they noticed a difference in their creativity levels. It was also interesting to note that psychological and physical traumas can trigger bipolar disorder. One patient also had symptoms increase when there was a major change in her life, like moving to a new city.

In the back of the book there is a list of foods to avoid if you are taking a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOIs). Doctors will also find some of the drug information helpful while treating their patients. For example, Ziprasidone (Geodon) does not cause weight gain. Lorazepam (Ativan) is also useful for treating anxiety and insomnia. So while this book is especially helpful for physicians I think it is a little overwhelming for the casual reader.

This book is a compilation of cases that the authors comment on. Not what I had expected, and wanted something more bcasic dealing with this illess, e.g., symptoms, demographics, medications, other treatments that are helpful. I'm sure the clinicians buying this book are thrilled. Not what I needed tho.

This book is a very well-written and well-organized compendium of strategies to manage treatment-resistent mood disorders. It will be very useful for psychiatrists and therapists, and it can also be helpful to people who have struggled to recover from these illnesses. An extraordinary book which will improve many lives.

Mostly a collection of case studies and results of specific medications. Technical and more of a reference than 'general reading'.
