I have been a trauma therapist for over 25 years, and almost wish I were fresh out of college so I could have the great good fortune to have Robin's new book "The Trauma Treatment Handbook: Protocols Across the Spectrum" as my constant companion. I have been an avid reader of nearly everything Robin has written, both for warmth and readability, her intelligence and wisdom, cutting edge knowledge base and deeply human way she connects with the reader. This type of beautiful, accessible writing is rare in our professional literature.

Being a trauma proficient therapist requires a great many skills and a full toolbox of effective techniques. However, technique is not enough. The most important aspect a therapist brings is PRESENCE. Being authentic, attuned to your client and fully attentive is primary. Robin has somehow managed to convey these qualities as a writer. She synthesized a wide variety of practices and illustrates what she has gleaned from them, and demonstrates how she uses them. Owning this book is like having a mentor and teacher by your side. Or the next best thing. We are so fortunate that she wrote this book.

This book has a forward by Daniel Siegel. Diane Fosha, Steven Porges, Onno van der Hart and Kathy Steele have written their praise for this amazing book. These giants, these heroes in the field of trauma all recognize the brilliance of this book, and that alone should be enticement enough to crack open this book. Once you do, you will have a hard time putting it down. I surely did.

Robin, if I were the queen of the universe, I would make this required reading for every counselor, therapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist in practice and in every training program worldwide. I hope this book is translated into every language available.

This book cuts to the chase. Practical, succinct, and readable, it makes sense of the bewildering array of trauma treatments. Acknowledging their commonalities as well as their differences, it explains what kinds of client and what kinds of trauma can be treated with each approach; and its excellent bibliography points the way to further study of each modality. It lights a clear path for the student (I recommend it as a college text), and the experienced therapist will find inspiration for further growth.
It is a must for any therapist who is interested in treating trauma (which should be just about all of us), but who does not know which approaches might be most compatible with his or her style or treatment population.
(The purpose of this book is not to give EMDR protocols. For those, see Robin Shapiro's earlier books, EMDR Solutions: Pathways to Healing, EMDR Solutions II: For Depression, Eating Disorders, Performance, and More (Norton Professional Books).)
I've been treating trauma with EMDR and other approaches for 14 years, and I wish I'd had this book at the very start; it would have saved me a lot of time and grief. And even after 14 years, there's much for me to learn in this handbook.

This is a must read for every therapist. Robin defines trauma and dissociation and then walks the reader through the process of assessing and treating trauma patients in an organized and understandable way. She offers clear and comprehensible overviews as well as additional resources of various trauma treatments for the interested reader. This is not an in depth review of each trauma treatment but a way of thinking about trauma, and navigating the often confusing territory of assessing which treatment would help which type of patient. Her examples offer an excellent way of clarifying how to identify different types of trauma and the treatments that work for them. This is often exactly where clinicians get confused.

As in her previous books, Robin's clear style of writing and her accessible humanness as she describes realistic patient situations is a great teaching tool. This book has been needed for a long time. It is remarkable in its openness to many ways of treating trauma, as this allows the clinician choice in treating a client, with the understanding that often, various techniques are useful, there is not just one best way. I wish I had been able to read this material as a beginning therapist and find it a most useful guide as an experienced therapist.

Robin's style of writing is warm, clear, and informative, and, along with her gift of being able to identify and synthesize the merits of various treatments, make this book an invaluable resource. She brings together a wide range of knowledge in a most skillful way. To me, this is the greatest contribution of this book.

You won't regret buying it.

A recommended pick is Robin Shapiro's The Trauma Treatment Handbook: Protocols Across The Spectrum. It offers psychotherapists a fine survey gathering trauma treatment options and analyzing nearly twenty currently-practiced trauma treatments under one cover. There's no 'one fits all' approach to such management: therefore having this analysis of different successful methods under one cover makes for a key reference for any practicing therapist or library catering to them.
