This is an incredible 'childrens' book. The artwork is incredible, detailed and unbelievably imaginative. I was amazed to discover that it had gone out of print, as I was certain that in the time that had lapsed between my childhood and now it would have surely become a classic. I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys very artistic, creative and amazingly detailed picture books, not to mention a swashbuckling adventure story.

I have a copy of this book. It is exquisitely illustrated by Alan Aldridge, who illustrated for The Beatles.
Celtic lettering of unparalleled quality.

Really a pity to see such a treasure of a book out-of-print. I grew up with Dad reading this to me (am now 25) and the challenge of its language and verse, not to mention exquisitley curious art, broadens a child's horizon's far more than the PC drivel we print today.
Too bad I can't find a mint copy anywhere :/

This book is fabulous - and highly recommended. This book has kept my children (two preschoolers) fascinated. The illustrations are richly detailed, gorgeous colours, and full of things which invite question and discussion.

The rhyme itself is a rollicking yarn about a cat on a boat in Drake's time which is captured by Spaniards - the cat is put in a Spanish dungeon and escapes.

Wonderfully whimsical writing from Adams, rich use of language which extends your children further, and enough for them to leaf through and look at on their own. Highly enjoyable to read to them as it has a children's and an adults level.

This is one book I would recommend having in your children's library to read for them! They will love it!

Stirring, original, timely (pirates, anyone? cats?), edgy, beautiful, brilliant, TREASURED. I love this book and you would, too, if it were available. I hope that someday whoever holds the rights to this book will re-issue it. The world is waiting.

I bought this book for my son when he was a baby and it quickly became a favorite that he and then his little sister would return to again and again. I also loved reading it to them -- the cadence is very clear( after a few times) and lyrical.

I ordered it again when after reading her brother's old book it to my grandchildren my daughter who was sitting nearby commented that it had been one of her all time favorites. it's great and never gets old.

I bought this book again a few years ago for my own 'adult' collection of books. As a child I remember my mom reading it to me and asking 'Mom, are there really fish that can fly?' This was one of the starts of my career as a published artist. I read it to my kids and remembered about crying when my daughter asked me the same question.....'Dad, can fish REALLY FLY?!' Hands down, the best artwork out of any children's book ever written, great story line. I am saddened that it is out of print. It is well worth the $30+ you will pay for it. Another book I would suggest would be 'Wiley and the Hairy Man', expensive now too, but another book to be passed down from generation to generation.

I bought this book for the illustrations. As an illustrator myself, I buy quite a few children's books just to savor the pictures.

But this one yielded a great surprise - a classic tale of a valiant 'shippe's cat,' set in Elizabethan times. I do hope it is published again someday.
