Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Anyone who has ever made an angel in the snow or reveled in winter"the king of showmen"will delight in this collection of stories, verse and activities. Although some poems are better than others, this is nonetheless a strong collection, representing such writers as Gwendolyn Brooks, Ogden Nash, Isaac Bashevis Singer, John Ciardi and Myra Cohn Livingston. Teachers and parents will appreciate the bibliography of books about snow at the end of the volume, and children will enjoy making "Snow Muffins from Northern Canada," or reading Yoshiko Uchida's tale of the Jizo statues that lumber through the snow to repay an old man's kindness. Tomes's paintings, varied and beautifully designed, etch black shadows on white pages with graceful charm.

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5 This delightful companion anthology to Rainy Day (Lippincott, 1986) will be enjoyed by children and very useful to teachers and librarians. Here are poems, short stories, a few recipes and craft projects, snow facts, and a bibliography gathered from a multitude of sources written between 1939 and 1984. Each selection is illuminated by Tomes' soft charcoal and line drawings. Indexed by author and title, this should save many librarians from shoveling through a whole poetry collection for excellent lyrical material. Susan McCord, Boise Public Library, Idaho
