Tomie dePaola's artwork is in a genre all its own, with round heads and line-drawn figures that look like they might have been shaped from clay. This is a colorful collection of traditional Mother Goose rhymes, perfect for the transition from the toddler stage in which the book is more of a toy, to the read-aloud stage, even if the child doesn't understand everything being read. Mother Goose has the advantage of being lyrical and rhythmic, and many of the rhymes have tunes. As children get older they will also acquire a bit of cultural literacy, since phrases from Mother Goose often appear in literature and other kinds of discourse.

This volume don't include all the verses to different rhymes, but rather introduces the most-recognized refrain of each one. The cadence changes quickly from rhyme to rhyme, and the rhymes that are songs are interspersed well among those that are spoken, providing the best advantage to entice a very young child to sit still. A good choice for a gift or for your own child.

Our 10 week old loves hearing these rhymes. I usually pull this book out during the witching hours of 5-7pm when nothing works to keep her calm. I carry her around the house, bounce and rhyme from this book. IT WORKS!

This book is adorable! We originally received this book as a gift from a family member. It has been my son's favorite since he was around eight months of age, he is now two and a half. The board pages are very sturdy, easy to keep clean and easy to turn. The stories are mostly short, simple, classic nursery rhymes with simple, colorful illustrations. My husband and I have read the book to our son so much that he recites the rhymes along with us as we read, it's too cute. I bought this book as a replacement because a few months ago during a trip, his original book was accidentally left at his grandparent's house who live out of state. We didn't realize it had been left behind until we were unpacking after we arrived home. I immediately ordered a new replacement with super saver shipping from Amazon and had the new book in only a few days! I was thrilled with Amazon's super fast shipping and of course we LOVE the book!

Written for toddlers and young children this book is a good introduction to the world of picture books which are the next step up from simple board books. It is also a good introduction to the world of nursery rhymes. Yes, some of the rhymes do not have all the verses like "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe" but it is enough to keep a young child's interest. As they mature they will be eager to learn the rest.

Contains a lot of the regulars like Humpty Dumpty, This Little Pig, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, Diddle Diddle Dumpling etc plus a few that I had not heard before.

I give this book at baby showers or for the arrival of the new child. I love the illustrations and believe strongly that young children should hear, and rehear the rhymes as the basis for the development of oral language and literacy.
