This book was reviewed by Mother Daughter Book Reviews on their website.

Daylight Starlight Wildlife is a beautiful work of art which reminded me of bedtime classics for young children such as Time for Bed by Mem Fox and I Love You as Much… by Laura Krauss Melmed and illustrated by Henri Sorenson. I never tired of reading these books which featured soft lilting rhymes while gazing at the gorgeous illustrations magically capturing a wide variety of wildlife on full page spreads. To be clear though… Daylight Starlight Wildlife is NOT a rhyming book.

Not only is Daylight Starlight Wildlife an absolutely beautiful book to thumb through but it is educational as well. Animals are depicted in their natural habitat engaging in behavior at the appropriate time of day. Children will see a majestic red-tailed hawk soaring high into the sunny sky and will flip the page to see a barn owl flying in the night sky with a bright full moon in the background. I love the inclusion of some more “unusual” animals such as the flying squirrel, the luna moth, an adorable family of opossum, and a bobcat and her kitten. It’s a bit of a shame that there were two different varieties of owls instead of a completely different animal (a bat anyone?), but there is still quite the diversity of animals depicted in the book with some of their key features described through the text.

I highly recommend this beautiful picture book as a bedtime book for children ages 3 to 8 and would think that it would be a great choice as a read-aloud book in a kindergarten or early elementary school class.

* I received a copy of this book free-of-charge from Penguin Books in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

If your young children are interested in wildlife and you are interested in teaching them about the amazing creatures that roam outdoors by day and by night, this is the perfect book to share.

Lovely illustrated wildlife can be found throughout the pages of this book. Swallow tale butterflies, opossum and her plods, cotton tale bunny and kits, red-tale hawk, barn owl, white tail deer, fox, woodchucks, skunks, chipmunks, box turtles, bob cats, coyote, raccoon, wild turkey and cardinals.

The text is relatively simple, yet is written in a way to engage little ones in conversation about the critters they see on each page. Next to the illustrations, I though the "fun facts glossary" at the end of the book which shows a small picture as well as pertinent facts on each of the animals on the preceding pages. The vivid colors and textures throughout the books are outstanding.

An excellent teaching opportunity for parents and teachers to educate and encourage little ones to be outdoors and to care about the critters that live in the wild.

Summary: What animals come out at day? How about at night? Each two-page spread in this book looks at two similar animals, one diurnal and one nocturnal. For instance a mother woodchuck leads her babies through the same fields by day as the mother skunk and her offspring by night. The final pages provide a thumbnail painting and description of all the animals shown in the book; I learned a new word from these pages, crepuscular, which refers to animals that come out at twilight or dawn. Ages 3-8.

Pros: The book will encourage young children to observe nature in their own backyards at different times of day and night. The paintings are beautiful.

Cons: The text doesn’t quite reach the same soaring heights as the illustrations.
