Written by a talented speech and language pathologist with years of experience assessing and treating children, no small number of whom have exhibited and communicated signs of trauma, Yehuda has gleaned from her practice clues and cues all clinicians can benefit from reading. The case examples are poignant and very instructive. This book promises to enhance the field of child clinical interventions in every area where it is read and absorbed.

Na'ama shares a wealth of information about children and how trauma impacts them. This is an exceptionally easy book to read, with Na'ama using the children's own words to illustrate her message. There's knowledge here about language and child development, and there's also a genuine sense of warmth, heart, and healing. This is a book for everyone who works with trauma survivors - with children, or adults who used to be children - which means everyone. Well done, Na'ama.

As we prepared for our forthcoming Workshop on trauma and its generational transmission at the ISSTD Conference, Sydney, we just received and read Na’ama’s new book (imprint 2016 but our copy is in hand November 2015) and turning to page 224 (quoted below) we had a Eureka Moment!

Were felt vindicated in our view by Na’ama’s passionate focus on the need for us, as professionals, to reflect on our responsibility for self-care when working with traumatized patients - infants, children and adults. Her words resonated with our approach and we decided to quoted her in our Workshop’s Handout leading to our ‘Leaning Outcomes‘. Her book, written in the voice of a genuine expert is a generous gift to all professionals who deal with complex trauma. We can thoroughly recommend reading from cover to cover, to be nourished by her wisdom and clinical insights.

We quote this passage in full: ‘Taking care of ourselves is important not only for us, but for our clients. We may need a place to process our own reactions and realities, our pains and wounding, and biases and worries, the things that clients activate in us, the unworded and untold feelings and realities in ourselves. Sometimes a close trusted friend, spouse, partner, clergy, or peer group offers that support. However, for many of us who work with traumatized youngsters, seeking individual counselling can be a good way to attend to our own needs and history. Some clinicians attend therapy or supervision on an as–needed basis when issues arise. Others prefer ongoing therapy and use it to process both past pains and current challenges – especially when a history of childhood trauma may become activated (in aware and not–so–aware ways) by children in one’s care.
