Good news first: Heaven's Fall is the final book in the Heaven's Shadow trilogy. At the end of Heaven's War, the alien space ship (or rock) Keanu has in fact turned around from its path to leave the solar system and the 200 or so abducted people from earth are on their way home. Or so it seems. The return trip has in fact taken the best part of twenty years because the rock is somewhat below is usual functionality. In keeping with the spirit of the previous two books, the characters still have their "we might as well get used to it earlier rather than later" attitude. So instead of trying to send everyone back to earth, they only rebuild a small lander for six people who shall save the earth from whatever has befallen it (remember, those bad Reivers dropped off earlier). Also, they have started to seriously produce offspring (one fourteen year-old they - of course - bring along on the trip down to earth).

Luckily the Reivers have taken a laid-back approach at taking over the galaxy and only occupied parts of the Western world, where they are trying to build something very dangerous. In the meantime the Keanu team crash lands in India, where people are completely indifferent about the alien invasion. We might as well just accept it, I guess... if it weren't for that something that is being built in the Free Nation US and the handful of Keanu visitors who then try to get to it and stop it. Naturally they are caught, but left alive (for whatever reasons). Naturally also, the Reivers assign a human to push the final button because they themselves can't make decisions that would not only threaten the Architects home world but also endanger all life on earth. Ouch! But at least this is consistent within the trilogy; the whole crisis is completely bootstrapped and nothing is achieved.

4.5 / 5 - Top Pick

There is a breathtaking perspective provided in this imaginative tale that explores differences in philosophy and the culture-shock that is inevitable when vastly different paradigms interact. Despite the fact that I have not read the second volume in the series, “Heaven’s War”, there are enough allusions to past events that I was not completely lost. Dismayed, perhaps, at the unfolding of certain events, but not floundering and wondering what has transpired. It is particularly interesting to see things through the lens of a child who has never been to Earth, an even-tempered alien capable of slicing through an assailant effortlessly and an Aggregate formation designated as Carbon-143 which amazingly comes to radical conclusions. There are remarkable developments which prove that Keanu has untapped depths that still need to be explored, unexpected shifts in those previously labelled as hostile and ostracized and a wonderfully intriguing adjustment which definitely whets one’s appetite for the next story. I certainly wouldn’t want to deal with the repercussions that these people are dealing with but I can’t help but be jealous of the vast horizons that have opened for a handful of these intrepid folks and I look forward to seeing more of their adventures.

“Heaven’s Fall” by David S. Goyer and Michael Cassutt continues the thought-provoking science fiction series about mankind’s interaction with aliens as seen through the prism of experiences involving the near-Earth object (NEO) dubbed Keanu. Events that took place in “Heaven’s Shadow” and “Heaven’s War” have resulted in significant changes for both the humans who were gathered up and translocated to Keanu and the remaining human population on Earth.

Worthy ending to Heaven's book trilogy. However, Heaven's Fall ending leaves open the possibilities for more stories regarding our favorite Keanu crew, the Architects or what happens to mankind with Reivers still inhabiting the earth.

Good story but as with the first two books there are many characters telling their points of views. I found the multiple character perspectives and backstories annoying with the first two books. However, I was familiar with the characters by the time I read Heaven's Fall so the multiple characters perspectives was something I became more comfortable accepting.

The characters I grew to love and the well described locations kept me enthralled from beginning to end. There was a good balance of character development vs description of the tech side vs integration of alien characters. Well worth the price paid.

I loved the first two books of the Heaven series since there was enough original material to maintain a steady plot flow. But this last one made zero sense and in the end, was unsurprising.

Decades after Keanu left things are bad on Earth. The nano folks could (but strangely don't) take over the entire planet. Instead, they create identical robot creatures that work almost constantly. Many remaining humans have joined a cult that cooperates/worships the nano villains. They are also planning a final strike against their mortal enemies (the species of the Architect on Keanu) through the use of a wormhole that will destroy the planet while allowing them to send through an army. Tanks and guns will also be send through implausibly (these races are millions of times more advanced than ours yet a tank will damage them - lol).

But wouldn't you know it - Keanu returns just in time to stop the little buggers. The nano creatures they had encountered and defeated earlier have taken over most of Earth outside India which is fortunate since that is where the Keanu crew lands. Lots of "this is so alien to me" chatter amid a search for a solution to carry out their master plan. Of course, the plan is bungled and they must rely on the goodness of strangers, in this case a nanobot with a heart. After an overly long chase scene and some comings and goings on Keanu the X-men and women valiantly defeat the bad guys, save the homeworld of the Architects from tanks and machine guns (lol) and perhaps point a way toward a Kumbaya moment for humans, aliens and machines. Would make a great movie.
