If you are into nitpicking, this book is great. While reading it, I was able to remember most of the scenes that were discussed, but the best way to read this book is with the episode playing in the background. Some nits require that you freeze and rewind to catch it. Each episode review contains trivia questions, but they are hard, so dont feel bad if you get them wrong. Also, Season seven is not covered in this one. It is included in part 2. I recommend this for al Trekkers. This author has also come out with a Deep Space Nine book, and Original series book, and an X-files book, as well as a sequel to this one. It must be nice to make a living nitpicking TV episodes!

If you're a major Star Trek fan like me, then you have to get this book. It's loaded with lots of continuity errors, plot oversights, and inconsistencies within the TNG series, (Like them saying matter created on the ship's holodecks absolutely can't exist outside the holodeck, then the author goes on to point out where it actually does in a few episodes for example, or when Data speaks using contractions when he's supposedly "not capable" of speaking in contractions!). Each episode is summarized and has its own section where the author points out and discusses (sometimes going into his own personal thoughts and theories) about that episode's mistakes. And there's also some tough trivia questions for each episode, that's a nice bonus. Wish I'd come across this book sooner, because it was first published all the way back in 1993.

It's a really fun read for the most part. Having said that, I do have some problems with the book. I'm wondering if this was Phil Farrand's first time ever writing a professionally published book? Because even though it's fun and interesting to read about all of the mistakes and inconsistencies throughout the show's run, Farrand's writing style to me is kind of awkward and boring. And while it's all done in good fun, some of the jokes he makes weren't funny and fell flat for me. Also there were times he pointed out a "mistake" in a show, and I could think of some possibilities to rationally explain what happened concerning that particular "error", so in my mind it's not a mistake then (but that's what nitpicking is all about I guess!). And this being more of a fun and "humorous" book there were some times when I thought his criticisms were a bit too harsh. But overall Farrand does a good job.

Fun! Fun! Fun! - Oh sure, there are those who enjoy watching Trek for the sake of
watching, but after about the 15th time you've seen Troi in those low-cut uniforms
or admired Data's Sherlock Holmes, you just have to find MORE in these episodes.
When you reach that point of Trek saturation - pull out this book (or the companion book
for Classic Trek) and crank up that VCR. You'll be amazed at what you've missed, or
maybe smug with what you've already noticed! Either way, you just can't lose! Buy
your set now & stun your friends & family with your astute observations during their next Trek rerun viewing

Everything you never wanted to know about the first six seasons of Star Trek the Next Generation is listed in this book.
From the contradictory remarks by Worf concerning bathing, (how could they miss that, to classic lines like "He probably figures that we don't get to see a lot of handsome women out this way and someone like you might get a little more cooperation from me...He's probably right."
Farrand celebrates the fun lines, evaluates plots, throws heavy blows at things that offend him (particularly the message of one episode), and even finds one that he can't find anything wrong with.
Do you want to know which episodes I am referring to? You'll have to get the book. This is however for hardcore Star Trek TNG fans, casual fans may enjoy it and non-fans will declare, "get a life." but you know what. They don't have to buy the book.
Worth your money depending on which group you belong to.

I first bought this book in 1994, but that copy wore out, and unfortunately, got a bit of mold on it, so I had to toss it. Glad I found this one. Phil Farrand is great at finding nits, and as most Trekkers do, I love nits because I love the show.

I wish the publisher didn't chicken out on this, because there was supposed to be one on Star Wars, and likely on all the other Star Trek series and movies.

TNG was a close-second favorite to DS9 in regards to Star Trek serieses. I don't recall how I came across the Nitpicker's Guides but I enjoy every one of them because they offer a deeper look into episodes, which causes you to notice things you didn't before, and this is coming from someone who considers himself quite observant. While many of the 'nits' mentioned may be just that, extremely nitpicky and easily rationalized, this book is in no way official and strictly for entertainment. Unfortunately due to legal reasons there will be no updated Guides, but the website started by author Phil Farrand (nitcentral) is still up and running if you're curious.

I'm one of those people who picks up on continuity errors in movies and TV shows. I don't know how, but I catch some pretty odd ones. But with this book, Phil Farrand goes where no one has gone before. I don't know how the guy does it. Just make sure read the entry right at the beginning of the show so you can look for all the stuff. Some of it's hard to spot!
