Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Farrand's companion to his Nitpicker's Guide for Next Generation Trekkers (1993) lists each episode of the original, Kirk-Spock-McCoy TV series, each of the trio's movies, and the pre-Kirk pilot TV show, "The Cage," too. For each, Farrand first gives its "star date" (remember how the shows began: "Captain's log, star date . . ."), a plot summary, some of his own "Ruminations" on it, his choices of "Great Moments" in it, and two trivia questions. Then Farrand gets to the good stuff--the mistakes made in each program: production goofs, plot loopholes, continuity failures, and bits cut from a show when it was put in syndication. Concluding each entry are answers to the trivia questions; also concluding each TV episode entry is a tally of the stills shown underneath the show's closing list of production credits. As you can tell from the page count, this is no thrown-together exploitation opus. It's a thoroughgoing labor of love that ought to please Trekkers everywhere. Ray Olson

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly entertaining reading!, December 21, 1997
By A Customer
Ever sit down to your favorite Trek episode and think, "Hey, didn't that guy die a couple episodes back?" Prove yourself right! Join the Nitpicker's Guild and spot things like Spock's ear jobs, mysterious changes in rank, and my personal favorite, Kirk splitting his pants! Definitely worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise! A reference book that is actually humorous., May 24, 2001
Phil Farrand does a wonderful job here of pointing out things the creators of Trek got wrong (and right!)--small things most of us would never give a second thought to. My favorite glitch:

"Return of the Archons--Just after Festival begins, Kirk & the others scamper for cover. In one shot, a rock about the size of a cantaloupe arches down and whacks a crew member on the top of his head. Surprisingly, the man seems unaffected, and the rock simply bounces off. Now that's the kind of guy you want to take on landing party missions!"

I couldn't stop laughing for about five straight minutes after I read this one. If you like Star Trek, and you like to laugh--get Phil Farrand's Nitpicker's Guides for Trekkers. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Trek Fan Loved It, January 31, 2002
By A Customer
I loved this book. Whenever I'm in need of a laugh I still return to it. Every blooper, every continuity problem and and every single episode is discussed in this very funny guide. The author was obviously a huge fan of Star Trek.

2.0 out of 5 stars A lot of nitpicks in this book are invalid
For example he picks on one Trek ep for mentioning the Euygenics Wars of the 1990's and the fact that in the real life 1990's the Eugenics wars never took place. Read more
