Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-This lighthearted, clever look at the world of ballet is a fine introduction for those who enjoy some humor with their art. A young girl whose uncle is a dancer wants to learn more about this subject for a class assignment, so he takes her to her first ballet, Swan Lake, at Lincoln Center. Elizabeth enthusiastically describes the plot, and childlike, colorful illustrations and dramatic color photos depict theatrical moments. Interspersed throughout are interesting facts about the history of this dance form from Louis XIV to the present, examples of other ballets, and brief information about costumes and classes. Elizabeth's teacher is impressed with her report; readers will learn a lot and be entertained along the way.

Product Description

Elizabeth's uncle, a dancer with the New York City Ballet Company, takes her to see her very first ballet, Swan Lake. Elizabeth is so captivated by the performance that she decides to do her report on ballet. She relates some fun history of ballet-for example, the word "tutu" may come from a French word meaning "rear end!"-and even attends one of her uncle's classes, where Elizabeth learns what it takes to become a serious dancer.

Illustrated by Amanda Haley.
