Creation is strange and beautiful. GROSS OUT! is an early biology-related book that examines some of the gross creatures in nature. The animals the book examines include the giant leech, sea slug, red-bellied piranha, hagfish, tick, dung beetle, velvet worm, praying mantis, legless lizard, horned lizard, Surinam toad, cane toad, naked mole rat, vampire bat, Virginia opossum, hairy armadillo, fulmar, magnificent frigate bird, harpy eagle, and eagle owl. Personally, I found the information about the hagfish and the Surinam toad to be most interesting. GROSS OUT! also includes a recipe to make "owl barf balls." Although not photographic, the illustrations that accompany the text are really well done and quite useful in getting a better understanding about what is being discussed. They provide some great visualizations. Overall, GROSS OUT! is a fascinating early biology book for early readers. It would make a great gift for any child interesting in animals or who enjoys science and the outdoors.

My boys love this book and all the revolting little factoids it contains. My son had a gently-used book exchange at school and since we really don't have a huge library to choose from, we told him he could take his favorite to exchange and that we'd buy him a new one to replace it. He was so excited to share it and the recipient was very happy, as well. A very fun book!

I liked learning about the cane toad and the harpy eagle. I liked them because the cane toad can swallow a snake and the harpy eagle can swallow things bigger than itself. I liked the book because it had alot of information about animals that do gross things. This book is cool!

My son does not particularly enjoy reading himself, but this book series is one that he happily read. I highly recommend for any child that is interested in animals and some of the gross and interesting things that they do. We went to the zoo after reading this series too and my son had a ball seeing some of the animals from this series. He thinks these books are cool.

I work with struggling readers and have difficulty finding books with very high interest and low reading level. This book worked like a charm for my students. They were devouring it and even asked if they could borrow one of my classroom set books to take home after we finished reading it. The recipe at the end is also a great lesson for following directions!!!

Gross Out! is not a misnomer. You'll learn all kinds of gross and disgusting -- but fascinating! -- facts about the animal world. I'll admit my daughter doesn't find this as appealing as Freak Out!, Clarke's earlier book in the series, but she did like learning about the different things animals do for survival.
