I used this book as part of a WWII unit study for middle-schoolers, but the text would be appropriate for elementary students as well. The book was very engaging for my kids because the style is informative without being dry or textbook-y. I liked how some of the information was given from the Japanese perspective. This sparked a conversation about motives for WWII and I was thrilled that the kids wanted to learn more after reading this book. Recommended.

I got this for my son to have for a 5th grade project on pearl harbor, the topic was his choice. It was a little below his reading level, but that just made it easier and faster for the info to sink in, also used it as a visual aid in the presentation, his teacher was very impressed and hinted that she was going to order some for this and future classes.

Even as an adult who knew a lot about this event, I found myself devouring the book whole. The writing is so vivid and the photographs and drawings so clear, that I felt present at the scene, crouched to behold those rising suns raining down their bombs. I especially loved the story of the two guys who'd been up all night climbing into their planes in their tuxes, energized by the dismaying shock of this unexpected onslaught. I liked, too, that the author included the story of Japanese internment and the A-bombs. The full story is key to remember so that we can all work toward a peaceful future.

Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.

I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

Our family loves this series! Brings history to life for my second and third graders.

I hated history as a kid - it was so dry and boring. I'm thrilled to find books like this that make history fun for my kids.

Great educational series of books. Very fun for my nine year old. He mostly reads fiction but these books are easy to read and understand. This books covers the basics of Pearl Harbor so that a young reader can stay engaged. My son usually finishes these books in a day or two.

I'm so glad to find this book and this wonderful series. This book is written in an accessible way and explores difficult and upsetting subject matter at a level that's right for this age group. Well done.

Ages 8-12. Like others in the series, this one's approx 100 pages with B&W illustrations. Consists of an intro, 10 chapters, about 8 full page sidebars, a section of B&W historical photos in the middle, 2 timelines, and bibliography.

Demuth is also the author of Who Was Laura Ingalls Wilder?, sure to be a class favorite among girls when released) and Who Is Bill Gates?

Loving the series!

I thought this was a very inspiring and educational look at the war. It gave so many details that I was not aware of personally. My grandson and I both learned a lot from this easy-to-read book.
