Patti Callahan Henry has truly created a beautifully-written, engaging novel that is rich with emotion. Set in a Georgia beach community, it tells the story of the three estranged Sheffield sisters who reunite to save their family's beloved bookstore. As they host a week of bookstore events, all three are forced to confront the conflicts that tore them apart. In the end, their family loyalty and love for each other draws them together again. Magnificently told in alternating narratives, each sister's unique and relatable story is told. As a sister myself, I really, truly loved this heartwarming tale of the loving and imperfect bond between sisters. I highly recommend this wonderful, touching book!!

Part of my beach reading selection this summer - lighthearted, quick and easy read. Everything ties up too neatly in the end, however, and the resolution to the novel feels rushed. Good for a summer day of reading when the kids are making noise at the beach/pool and you have to interupt your reading several times throughout the course of the day. Probably not a good book club selection or for those who are looking for a deep, profound read.

If you love books and have sisters -- or 'sister like friends' you will most likely find this story to be satisfying and entertaining. The family book store is in trouble and the sisters get together to keep it going. Romance, friendships made long ago renewed and the inevitable sibling rivalry. Patti Callahan Henry is a gifted author and she doesn't disappoint in this story of family set in a beach town in Georgia.

So many stories going on, but isn't that "family"? I never had any sisters, but I could picture each of these girls and their Mother as they were re=uniting for a worthy cause. I love books, and boodstores and could browse for hours and this bookstore intrigued me. Also how the two unlikely sisters then went to a flea market and surprised the sister running the bookstore. I was so glad they re=united and how they reacted to their Mother. You knew they loved their Mother in so many different ways. It was a "feeling" book on all levels. I loved the young boy and his "fishing" and his reaction to life with so many females, and then with the males that came into his life that loved "fishing" too. I would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone who wants to "feel good" when they finish reading it. Maybe it is not everyone's cup of tea, but it was surely mine.

...but unless I read wrong, this woman, Kitsy, who has the name of a housepet, is 70 years old, with a daughter in college, who from her actions is still a teen or at most early twenties? I started this book this morning and don't know if I am going to finish it, so I'm giving the part I read 3 stars. If I am wrong on this age thing, I would like to know.

Driftwood summer by Patti Henry Callahan
Book starts out with Riley, raising her son above the bookstore. We learn of how the store got to be where it's located.
Alternating chapters from the 3 sisters as the story unfolds.
200th year anniversary week long party is planned, something for everybody. She learns when her mother falls down the stairs that she also has cancer in her bone that will be treated after the party.
Her sisters are to come also to visit, which they are not to be told about the cancer. She also has broken bones...
Maisey had run away years ago from Georgia to CA, working as an interior designer. The boss can do without her for a bit.
Adeline goes to college but enjoys the years partying her life away. She's coming home early to help with the bookstore as it's failing.
Ladies have long time sorrows and joys, some they are able to work through as others who visit the summer town return for the summer...
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This was the first book I have ever read by this author, and probably the last. Although I read it to the end, I thought the entire storyline was much too contrived. There was something about the characters and their issues that intrigued me, but the conversations and interactions between the family members were awkward and shallow.

The plot revolves around a 70 year old woman with 3 daughters, ranging in age from 22 to 34. For a 70 year old woman to have a 22 year old daughter got me started on the wrong foot. And the idea that a daughter who has only been home once in 12 years, to attend her father's funeral, and who had very little contact with her family, would come home and immediately -- like the very first morning -- be able to assume responsibility in the family bookstore seemed absurd. The responsibilities of the three girls during the course of the "birthday celebration week" were ridiculous and out of touch with reality. And with the amount of time they spent flirting with their various love interests it seemed there were about 36 hours in each day.

The mutual "love interest" of the two oldest daughters, Riley and Maisey, was also way overplayed. Along with taking care of his elderly father, Mack was playing up to both sisters. I just don't think that would happen. They weren't 16! And why would he and his father attend the "book club night" at the store? That made no sense at all.

My gut instinct was that this was the first book written by this author, and that she was very young. I was surprised to discover that was not the case. There are much better "summer reads" out there.
