Ive been a fan of the Pink Carnation series for over a year but never taken the time to write any reviews. **hangs head shamefully**. Lauren Willig writes with such intelligence, sophistication, wit and humor and Ive fallen in love with both her style and each and every character she has created thus far. THis latest installment met and exceeded all my expectations. Like a previous reviewer said, I, too, had never given much thought to Turnip's character but he fared wonderfully in his leading role in this novel :-) Deuced loveable, that vegetable is. :-)
I suddenly have the urge to re-read all the books in the series, starting from the beginning again, and relive all the great moments as i wait impatiently for the next Orchid book to be released! Bravo Ms. Willig! Keep up the incredible work!!!

Fans of Ms Willig will note the absence of Eloise and Colin in The Mischief of the Mistletoe. I didn't mind at all since there is still plenty to rave about here. It continues Ms Willig's winning combination of romance and espionage. Through a chance encounter, Turnip Fitzhugh and Arabella Dempsey find themselves embroiled not only in each others' lives, but also in a plot to save the nation's secrets from getting into the wrong hands.

But what makes this a winner in my book is Turnip himself, certainly a different kind of romantic lead. He is far from the dark and brooding type, he dresses outlandishly, and he unintentionally creates humorous situations for himself. His manner of speaking is also markedly different from other heroes in the Pink Carnation series. He is also a very learned man, but Ms Willig allows the readers to discover this for themselves, rather than have another character point out how clever he can be. I like that everyone else (except Arabella, of course) tends to dismiss him as a buffoon. With Turnip, what you see is what you get: a genuinely endearing and guileless romantic lead. It's definitely refreshing to see a hero who can genuinely make a woman both laugh and swoon.

Who would have thought I would enjoy a story whereby the lead character's nickname is a vegetable with such unpopular appeal...a turnip. If you have read any of the books poor Reginald Fitzhugh is always cast to the side and ridiculed for acting like a ...turnip. By the end of the story you are cheering on ...turnip. I also LOVED how the reader gets the true inner workings of the sub-plots of three of the series past books: "Blood Lilly, Night Jasmine & Crimson Rose!" It was just brilliant! I thought I would miss not reading about Collin and Eloise but the book flowed more smoothly. It is a must read for those that have read any of the "Pink Carnation Series" books! Just read the other three first, I promise then this one will read like a true gem.

This was a wonderful book to read for Christmas! It has so many things that I love! It has romance, mystery, intrigue, suspense, and humor and it is all wrapped around a Christmas Pudding! Yes, I said a Christmas Pudding. It is a wonderful mystery that is written in the style of Jane Austen, and the mystery begins with a message found in a Christmas Pudding! This is the first book in the Pink Carnation series that I have read, and it was wonderful. The book does not have to be read in any particular order, as I was able to know what was going on without having read any of the other books. I loved the characters in this book, and even Jane Austen herself makes a few appearances. But, my favorite character is Turnip Fitzhugh. He is handsome, smart, athletic and just seems like a perfect hero. I will definitely be reading more of Lauren Willig's books! I am a big Jane Austen fan and of course I have read all of her books, so I am always looking for books that are written in the same fashion as hers. Sometimes I am disappointed, but not with Lauren Willig's stories. In the book Jane Austen Made Me Do It, Willig's story was one of my most favorites and after reading this one, I suspect that she will be permanently in my favorite authors list. I look forward to reading her other books.

Here is a little sample of the humor that is found in this book. "As he clasped her right hand with his left, prancing in a circle with Danforth and Lucy Ponsonby, she smiled up at him and unselfconsciously gave a little puff of breaath to blow a stubborn lock of hair out of her eye.

It was the most uncously seductive thing he had ever seen. Turnip nearly lost his foorint.

Of course at this point, she could be debone a kipper with a fish knife and he would find it seductive, he was that far gone."

Lauren Willig is one of my favorite authors and I loved this book as much as I have loved all of her other books in this series. A historical fiction romance with the inclusion of Jane Austen in this storyline adds a lot of charm and humor for fans of Austen's work like myself. The present day storylne of Eloise which is in all the other books in this series is not in this book, however, I did not miss that part of the story. I liked being able to immerse myself totally in the past with this book, especially since it is set in Bath, England. Overall, this book was awesome and really funny; I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.
