“There was something in Reckless that was also the best in the Marines, that quality that urged them onward beyond their natural strength and spirit.” Author Tom Clavin (THE HEART OF EVERYTHING THAT IS) revives the horrors and heroism of the Korean War (“a lot of courage, but little glory”) in this biography of a little Mongolian mare that became a deservedly decorated Marine sergeant and retired with full pension rights.

Destined for greatness, the mare was the offspring of a game racing dam and the charge, for a time, of a hard-working stable-boy and war waif, Kim Huk Moon. Though Kim knew her finer capabilities, he was forced to use her to seek out and haul junk to help the boy’s struggling family. But one day, he had a chance to put her out on the racetrack where she belonged. Marine Lt Eric Pedersen saw the horse racing and offered to buy her for $250, an enormous sum for Kim, cash he needed to stock up on survival goods and purchase a prosthetic leg for his sister.

Horses have been used in warfare since man first tamed them, and Reckless would be no exception. Though small, she could carry one-quarter of her weight in rifles and ammo. Clavin has studiously researched and clearly loves his subject matter --- not only Reckless, but also the courageous men with whom she worked. Sgt. Joe Latham trained her to navigate the terrain with “holes in the ground gouged out by artillery and mortar blasts, and dead and wounded men to avoid stepping on,” hauling loads of shells or burdened with a heavy recoilless rifle. She was taught to kneel, fall and hide, and how to avoid barbed wire and communication cables.

"Reckless" rightfully joins a very exclusive club: one where bonds between humans and animals become the stuff of legend. A company of tough, proud Marines adopt this big-hearted pony and she, in turn, adopts them and pushes the boundaries of courage and duty under fire. It seems impossible that this horse will survive the challenges handed to her, but she does, and inspires her Marine "brothers" to persevere as well. This is a terrific story, carefully researched and very well written.

An incredible, timely book about a wondrous horse and intrepid Marines fighting the war in Korea, a peninsula that smolders these 60 years later under a dangerous truce. Tom Clavin's history reads like a novel but unfortunately is cold and factual.

This is a torrid history that reads like a novel but reveals truth. Clavin's well-researched, jarring reminder of the terrible battles in Korea, 1950-53 nasty "police action" led by the United Nations and fought by rugged Americans and a fine horse.
As a small note, Clavin writes about the exchange of 6,670 Communists for 689 of UN (;largely American) prisoners of war. This should startle Obama critics who attack a 4:1 exchange of Taliban prisoners for an American G.I.
Less startling is the huge numbers of casualties during 1950-53 that is remembered mostly by survivors and those era veterans who like me, for some miracle of assignment, narrowly missed joining the muddy, rat-infested frontlines of Korea.
More to the point, the book again demonstrates the folly of wars and how, unfortunately, history finds that brave men like those among the 1st Marines and an incredible horse take the brunt of the action.
As one of the paper's reviewers, I have written a most favorable report on this book for The Oklahoman.

Wow! A heroic horse combined with Marine Corps wartime grit, tenacity, and sacrifice is the stuff of which terrific narratives are made. Take a deep breath, as the exciting and meticulous reporting of this book puts you in the saddle as the shells burst all about you. Think Seabiscuit meets Rin Tin Tin. Clavin's untold story is a must-have for any military book shelf or library.

I am always up for a good book about a horse, and when the description of this book said it was like a combination of Seabiscuit and Unbroken (both of which I've read), I was sold. Unfortunately, Clavin is no Hillenbrand and this book did not live up to my expectations, both in unsatisfying storytelling about Reckless and long stretches of slogging through Korean War history.

And I was reading under the best of conditions: I bought the book when it caught my eye in an airport bookstore, and I luxuriated in the bliss of the prospect of uninterrupted reading time for hours on my upcoming flight. I was fully ready to engross myself, let a lump come into my throat and a tear in my eye (which always happens somewhere in a horse story), and devour the book with my full, undistracted attention. Ah, a horse story. What could be better?

So imagine my dismay when I found myself bored and fighting to stay with the book for the first seven chapters. "No, it's just the beginning," I told myself over and over. "The beginning is always the hard part. It's important to have the context. Here's your chance to educate yourself about the Korean war, learn things you didn't know. Keep going, it'll get better." But the intensity which I had to fight, the complete absence of being able to just lose myself in the book, the continual pep talks I had to give myself, were a complete surprise to me. I usually have a huge tolerance for things that other people think "boring." I can read technical journals, biology textbooks, and financial statements with gusto. What was going on?
