Prior to reading this book I was a discouraged gay Christian. As much as I wanted to believe God loved me, I always felt ashamed and guilty about being gay. When I saw this book I had to read to read it and I was not disappointed. I can honestly say this book has changed my life and I am forever grateful for it. I feel empowered, positive and renewed in my faith. Should be required reading for all gay (and straight) Christians!

When I purchased this book, I did so thinking that I would give it a perfunctory read and then pass it along to one of my GLBT friends. I soon found much of my own story in Chellew-Hodge's words. Bulletproof Faith is an invaluable resource, not just for gay and lesbian Christians, but any person of faith who has struggled to make peace with The Divine and the world around them. Be Bulletproof.

Tough and tender, experienced and insightful, Bulletproof Faith is a manual LGBTQ people of faith will read to nourish their own faith while meeting the challenges of those so caught up in their own hurt and pain but using religion and religious arguments to stay stuck rather than face the real issues in their own lives. Rev. Chellew-Hodge walks believers through the steps that can prepare them to stop trying to win arguments with those who object to LGBTQ people and begin to experience every encounter as a chance to personally grow. (Winning isn't a virtue. We must sometimes "lose" to show that we really believe.) Though subtitled a "survival guide," I'd say it's really a guide to thriving in the midst of people who would rather see LGBTQ people anything but proud and healthy.

I have a friend who is battling cancer and felt God might be punishing her because she is gay. My sister's church had used the book and the study guides to examine the fact that our God is not a punitive God and that some bad things happen for other reasons. In this case, having cancer may have initially made my friend question her faith and her position, but Bullet Proof Faith helped her to realize it was strengthening her faith. I have passed this book around to other gay friends and each of them has had a positive reaction. My sister's suggestion to share this book with my friend was "right on". It being available on Amazon was perfect timing. Thank you and God Bless You All.

As a (straight) Christian mom of a gay Christian son, this book spoke directly to the issues I face in dealing with rigid, rejecting folks in my own faith community. The concept of the importance of developing a "bulletproof faith" so that I can continue to extend grace to those who are not extending grace to me or to my son, is as helpful for straight Christian supporters as it is for the intended audience.

This book provides the empathetic ear to the worlds problems today, regarding the complexities of being LGBT. It also provides an empathetic ear to this oppressed community of pupils. It equips the reader/learner with a better understanding that they are Gods children as well and that there is nothing wrong with those of the LGBT Community. I am the proud owner of this book and I boldly state that I support its context and would recommend this book for teaching purposes to anyone open to education, on how we can get equal rights and protection passed for everyone.

"Bulletproof Faith" works best if one approaches it as a surface self-help book. As a tool for being a Christian who is less tuned in to those who attack you (for whatever reason) it offers helpful advice and some nice activities that you can do in order to be able to better handle the slings and arrows that others throw at you. As a book that will "bulletproof" the faith of gay people who come from a strong evangelical background, it will be found lacking.
Personally I found the book mostly helpful and I enjoyed Ms. Hodge's honesty in exposing her own warts and issues. She has a bad temper, and often feels the need to get in the last word. Knowing this about herself, and being honest about it, enables her to be very blunt and constructive with her readers who share the same faults. That is a very helpful element of this book. She is also very upfront about the fact that this text is not meant to give you scriptural ammunition to fight those who want to condemn homosexuality. It does not provide that, and with a few exceptions many of her scriptural analysis are not all that insightful. But her heart is clearly in the right place, and that goes a long way with me.
I also liked how Hodge occasionally inserts into the text little excerpts that she calls "Spiritual Survival Exercises". These are meditations, prayers, and other helpful tools that she has used in her life to help her become closer to God, and having tried most of them some work for me, some don't. Ms. Hodge is just trying to jump start your prayer/thought life with God.
However, there are also some flaws in the book that leave it and its subject matter vulnerable to criticism. It is there, as much as I wish it wasn't, and this does detract from the work. First off she uses some ridiculous examples to make her points.
