DEFINING THE PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE FOR STUDENTS

client • business • delivery • services

The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice has been a definitive guide to architectural practice for almost a century. Now this student edition, which has been carefully adapted from the Thirteenth Edition of the Handbook, gives students vital access to the cutting edge of the profession–with essential information on how architects are managing the change from product-based practices to those that are knowledge-based and service-oriented.

Reviewed by a group of leading architectural educators, this edition distills material from the professional edition to provide a compact and convenient reference for students. In addition, it contains an overview of the architectural profession and the NCARB Intern Development Program guidelines.

Addressing the growing importance of the client as a key participant in the practice equation, this student edition features a new section devoted to clients and client-architect relationships. Subsequent sections on business, delivery, and services offer a wealth of crucial "redefinition" knowledge and tools used to design, build, and maintain a successful practice –from business planning and project management to the development of expanded, added-value services. Also included are electronic samples of the AIA contract documents (more than 75 in all) on a companion CD-ROM.

Bringing together the experience of experts from architecture as well as law, business, and other professions, the student edition of The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice is an important resource to help prepare students for high-quality professional practice. In a convenient book/CD-ROM format, it offers tomorrow’s architects the information they will need to meet the changing demands of the marketplace with insight and confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful resource for architecture students, January 14, 2010
"The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, Student Edition" has 5 parts, including client, business, delivery, services, as well as resources.

Each part is further divided into chapters and subchapters, covering:

Professional life, legal dimension of practice, and professional development

Developing a practice, running a practice, marketing and public relations, client relations, human resources, financial management, risk management, and firm operation

Project definition, project delivery, project management, quality management, and building codes and regulations

Types of agreements and contract documents

Sources, definitions, document finder, and index.

Most of Americans will open a book, read an average of 18 pages, and then put it away and let it sit on the shelf. I guess most architecture students will look through the table of content of this book, and look up the portion when they need it, and then put it away.

One suggestion I have for AIA is to publish an abridged edition and reduce the number of the pages to make it more usable, and focus on the issues that young architectural professionals have to deal with everyday or 80% of the time in real architectural practice.

"The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, Student Edition" has 624 pages. Overall, it is a useful resource for architecture students.

Gang Chen, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Author of "Architectural Practice Simplified," "LEED GA Exam Guide," "Planting Design Illustrated," and other books on various LEED exams, architecture, and landscape architecture

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Study Material for the ARE, September 15, 2009
I have been working in the architecture field for several years and am taking the Architectural Registration Exams (ARE) in the hope of becoming a registerd architect. This text (in any of it's editions) is essential study material for the exams. The handbook is listed as reference material on the NCARB produced study guides for the exams.

This was also a textbook of mine in college. Since it cost so much, I borrowed it for the semester. The prof. let us slide through without reading it thoroughly. Reading through the different chapters now either backs up what my experience in the field has taught me, or reveals new insights into what I didn't understand before.
