Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In 1985, O'Neill, a California community college professor, tested his students and was shocked to discover how little they knew about U.S. cultural heritage and current events. His article in Newsweek and appearance on 60 Minutes started shock waves of public reaction. This book contains that test, with percentages of incorrect answers, plus 44 other tests, all with answers. Tests cover real and fictional persons and places, functional knowledge, references and allusions in the media, events of the century, geography, familiar quotations, literature, and fine arts. Trivia buffs and those who want to test their fund of knowledge will enjoy this book. Its real importance, however, may well be as an additional message to educators and other concerned persons regarding the woeful condition of cultural literacy in this country.

5.0 out of 5 stars So, You Think You're So Smart?, November 7, 2000
By "h1213" (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
Maybe you ALWAYS beat your family and friends at Trivial Pursuit. Maybe you've been dying to go on Jeopardy! and win some easy money. Maybe you got a perfect score on your SATs and you like nothing better than sitting around watching The Learning Channel. No matter how much you THINK you know, this book will reveal areas of knowledge in which you are lacking. I have always loved tests and trivia, and I was depressed when an earlier edition of this book went out of print before I could buy it. So scrounge together your nine bucks and order What Do You Know? before it's too late! It would also make the PERFECT inexpensive gift for that know-it-all in your family or office.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Winner, April 1, 2001

I bought this book to train my high school Scholars Bowl team. The depth and breadth of knowledge represented is excellent. It's particularly strong in the humanities and current events department.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy, will keep you going back, August 1, 2001

I recently bought this for a friend for graduation and then bought it for myself as well. It is chalk-full of information that you find on quiz shows and in board games. Think you're a useless trivia buff? Take a look at this book; it ranges from the complex to the simple and back again.

It is good for the entire family, if you're family consists of those aged at least 16 years old. Kids won't like this because the information is not aimed at them; it is geared towards adults. It is a nice book and will keep you entertained for hours.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not spectacular
While many of the question in the book were interesting, they did not have that timeless quality that makes a book endearing. Read more
