By K. DeBoer on November 20, 2009
Format: Paperback
Part of Cambridge's recent "Roman Literature and Its Contexts" series, this small but rich volume investigates not only "big-name" Latin authors, such as Lucretius, Vergil, and Ovid, but lesser-known or fragmentary writers such as Valerius Flaccus, Statius, and Livius Andronicus to explore the "gendering" of Latin epic. In sum, Keith applies cutting-edge literary theory to shed a fresh light on some very old texts and raises numerous intriguing issues. Her readings are both insightful and interesting, as well as engaging and readable. Especially recommended for the Vergilians in the crowd.

As Keith states in the introduction, Latin epic is not only a genre written by, for, and about men, it also acts to shape the Roman concept of masculinity. She explores this further in the second chapter, "Epic and Education" in which she shows how fundamental Latin epic was to the Roman educational system, since it was believed to illustrate the Roman ideal of "virtus"--literally, manliness.

The third chapter, "The Ground of Representation," explores the peculiar association in Latin epic between women and the earth. Although the feminization of land is far from unusual, Keith argues that Latin epic takes the generic "Mother Earth" a step forward by literally "immersing" women in the landscape--such as Caieta, who is buried in Italy in the Aeneid, or Ilia, who is thrown into the Tiber River by her brother. As Keith notes, the incorporation of these women into the earth allows them to be appropriated by men: they become the passive nurturers of the male actors who emerge from them.
