Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–In this sequel to Oh. My. Gods. (Dutton, 2008), Phoebe, a descendant of the Greek Goddess Nike, is sent to Goddess Boot Camp by her stepfather so that she can learn to control her magical powers, on which she will be tested. But Phoebe is in training for a marathon in the Pythian Games, her boyfriend may be cheating on her, and the other girls at camp are about 10 years old. Add the fact that her evil stepsister is a counselor, and life is worse than it might be in Hades. Phoebe's inner thoughts and emotions are conveyed well, and readers will feel for her. The plot has many twists and turns and moves along nicely, and there are beautiful descriptions of the Greek islands. However, the novel falls short in the last few chapters, which wrap up the several plot threads too neatly and have a disappointing resolution. Nevertheless, those who enjoyed the first book will want to read this one.–Jennifer-Lynn Draper, Children's Literature Consultant, Oshawa, Ontario

From Booklist

In this sequel to Oh. My. Gods. (2008), teenage Phoebe continues to adjust to her new life on Serfopoula, the island where her stepdad runs a boarding school for the descendants of Greek gods. Phoebe still hasn’t learned to control her newly discovered divine powers, so she enters a remedial Goddess Boot Camp program. Fans of the first book will recognize the same chick-lit elements here: snappy dialogue, picture-perfect mean girls, and misunderstandings and reconciliations with a dreamy boyfriend. A mystery about Phoebe’s dad’s fate adds to the lighthearted, magic-packed fun that provides enough background for series newbies. Grades 7-10. --Gillian Engberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, June 20, 2009
Pheobe's having problems controlling her magical powers. Often, what she's thinking transforms in her everyday life.

The gods aren't happy. She's scared they'll kill her on the spot (after what happened with her father).

Damian enrolled her in Goddess Boot Camp before heading on his honeymoon. He forgot to tell her the average age of the campers before he left. Now, Pheobe's desperately trying to keep her powers under control in front of a bunch of 10-year-olds.

She's also worried about passing a test from the gods, a possible cheating boyfriend, and her snarky stepsister.

The addition of Pheobe's powers to the story adds humor as she struggles to control them. The sequel to OH. MY. GODS. continues its delightful magical, mythological tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars good book for tween agers, September 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book for 11-15 year olds its cute and fun and it even throws in a little greek history. It is the follow up in a series and is a good fun read. I have no problem letting my 12 year old read it.Those who like the Princess series by Meg Cabot or the Super 16 series by Jax Abbot will like these.

4.0 out of 5 stars for tweens and teens who loved Percy Jackson, July 11, 2009
"Goddess Boot Camp" is the second book in a whimsical series by Tera Lynn Childs. Along with the first book, "Oh. My. gods." it might look like a Percy Jackson rip off at first, but Childs has her own unique style and her tales are not actually that similar to the Lightning Thief saga. Sure, both feature modern day kids who find out that they are related to Greek gods. Both are styled after school stories- Percy Jackson at Camp Halfblood and the books about Phoebe Castro at a high school for the descendants of the gods.

In other respects, the books are quite different. Percy and his friends are heroes who go on daring missions and engage in battle with monsters. Phoebe is a promising high school distance runner, brought to the secret island of Serfopoula, Greece when her mother marries the headmaster of the top secret Academy. Her original story is all about adjustment, fitting in, and teen love. The second book takes us through the summer after her first year in Serfopoula. Phoebe wonders if her dreamy boyfriend is cheating on her, she worries about an upcoming test, and she finds that maybe she can get along with her new stepsister after all. Phoebe's triumphs and tribulations are probably going to be best received by girls in their tween or early teen years.
