While I loved the first book (The Hallowed Ones) of the series, this one was a bit of a letdown. Still decent enough and well worth reading, but I felt that a lot of the excitement and thrill level of the first book was lacking here.

We start off with Katie and company on the road, heading north. Somewhere between the two books they must have had some scary run-ins with the vampires since they are more knowledgeable about how to avoid them. Sadly, we do not get to experience those moments. A lot of the book takes place during the daylight so there is not much action.

The best scene, while very mellow, takes places in a store. We get a glimpse into Katie and Alex's personalities before the world changed for the worse. I still love Katie in this book. She is strong and has a good set of principles she lives by. While she may have had issues back in her Amish communities, their values help her be true to herself. Alex is the same way. sweet, caring, protective but he has his own ideals to live by. So great characterization still going on!

The letdown: the "trick" of defeating/surviving that they learn. When I read bout it, my mind was just repeating: "Really? Seriously?" So pass on that concept. Unique or not I didn't care for it. So in the end, I like the characters, and the series as a whole, but this novel just didn't grab me the way the first book did. Final rating: between a 3 1/2 and 4 stars.

Laura Bickle really has created something completely wonderful in her duology The Hallowed Ones. Not only it is different, creepy, suspenseful and downright hard to put down but it is also something almost unheard of in the paranormal genre right now let alone the YA paranormal genre. It has vamps.

I know what you are thinking, what is so special about that? Vamps big deal!

But these aren't your ordinary sparkly, fall in love with them vamps. These are the real creatures of the night. Disgusting, vicious, ugly and horribly monsters. They thirst for blood and blood alone. They destroy, they reek havoc and they are far from nice as they can get. They are pure unadulterated evil.

I fell in love with Ms. Bickle's writing after reading the first installment and knew the second was going to be a must read.

I admit to being on the good vamp bandwagon but these vamps, these vamps are something else. And even though I am not suppose to fall in love with them, I did because they were everything vampires and nightmares were suppose to be and I loved it. The made my skin crawl thinking about them and made me want to turn lights on at night to scare them away and most of all, they made me fear them and hate them all in one. These were vamps done right. Lost Boys, Dracula done right.

I loved watching Katie grow from a very sheltered naïve girl into the strong woman that she is by the end of the book. Never once questioning her faith and standards although she doesn't stay the same nor feel the same way about everything, she does stay true to herself and I loved her for that.

The Outside follows The Hallowed Ones, a tale of rampant vampirism overtaking the world and even amid the land of the Amish. While The Hallowed Ones was one of my favorite reads so far this year, I was a bit skeptical that its follow-up could be as good. Color me happily surprised and deliriously engaged with the equally eerie sequel, which opens as Amish Katie, her Englisher sort of boyfriend, Alex, and her Englisher friend Ginger are cast into the vampire-filled world Outside, either to live or to die.

First, I'll say that my creeptastic monitor hit a solid ten early on with the appearance of the nasty vampires and the race to find secure ground every day as the night closed in. With just a vague plan to head north to Alex's family, the three outcasts head out, hoping to find food and shelter along the way. Time after time, Katie follows her heart rather than her head, almost getting herself and her friends killed; time after time, her instincts prove her to be correct. Not wanting to give any major plot points away, I will say that eventually a surviving group is encountered that might possibly offer hope for the future, but naturally major obstacles exist. Lots of action, lots of emotion.

It's Katie's struggles between how she was raised and what the world is now that held me glued to the pages; her evolving relationship with Alex rings very true, but it's Katie's growth personally and emotionally that is the heart of the story. I loved the symbolism of the water throughout, and I loved that Katie grew to be someone who decided to take chances, despite of her beliefs. I loved that Katie felt as strongly about animals as she did about humans, and I loved that she was ready to take on forces bigger than herself for what she felt was right.

I enjoyed both installments of this series so much, that I am sad there will be no more books. However, that being said, I have read several trilogies where an author should have quit after two, so in that way it is refreshing to read a two book series that is well done throughout.

"The Hallowed Ones" is a unique and fresh twist on the vampire/ horror young adult novel. The heroine of the series is brave, resourceful, smart and Amish. "The Outside" picks up where the first novel left off. Katie, her love interest Alex, and her older friend Ginger have been expelled from the Amish community she once belonged to. The elders in this community break with their usual protocol and punish Kate for having a relationship with an outsider even though she has not yet been baptized into the Amish faith. The trio is forced to attempt to survive in a world overrun by vicious, red-eyed blood suckers. Ms. Bickle has created a gruesome, somewhat original depiction of the monsters that is exciting and fun to read. The novel is fast paced and hard to put down. The relationships seem very authentic. I love how the relationship between Alex and Katie is depicted. They are two people who would have ordinarily never been involved together but are thrown together in post apocalyptic circumstances. The resulting relationship is complicated, rich and interesting.

The ending of this series is satisfying. I have read a lot of vampire novels and have never encountered unique characters and such a unique conclusion. Loved it. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a little thrill, a little horror with a little romance.
