Set in a time when the grand American carnival traditions were just starting to wind down, with broke audiences in the dust bowl starting to cynically question everything, _Wonder Show_ does an amazing job of questioning what "normal" actually means. Portia, the imaginative and spirited protagonist, is abandoned by every adult who would be her natural family, leaving her at a home for "wayward girls" that isn't at all what it would seem to be. Her inevitable flight into the world of Mosco's Travelling Wonder Show may just be the one kind of family she needs.

The book is completely engrossing. From the characters to the changing perspectives for each story, it's a book that keeps you on your toes, and teaches just a bit about history while you're spinning. (And I can tell you from personal experience that even the modern freakshows are fairly similar. The lingo survives, even if the days of airstream trailers and ballystages are a thing of the past.)

One caution: If you're a more conservative parent, there *is* a bit of adult themed stuff in here. Suicide, a bit of nudity. Not much more than you'd get on any given night of network television. But it bears mentioning to avoid any awkward questions. It's well-handled and very much in context; however, if you're the type who doesn't let your child see a PG-13 movie, you may want to give it a once-over first.

First Impressions: I'm amazed that I was so interested in reading and reviewing this book for one reason only: I hate circuses! They freak me out with all of the scary clowns and I always feel so bad for the animals. I had one crazy experience at a circus when I was little and I'll never go to another one. Ever. For some strange reason though, I really wanted to read this book. The synopsis sounded interesting, I liked another book about circuses (Water for Elephants), but I think what sealed the deal for me was the cover. I'm absolutely in love with the cover. It is so detailed and well done and it looks great on my bookshelves.

First 50 Pages: This isn't a terribly long and drawn out story and it only took me a few hours to finish reading the entire book. I adore the author's writing style. She has a very poetic and lyrical feel to her writing that few writers have. The descriptions in Wonder Show are vivid and complex, especially for a book that is geared to a younger teen. The whole time I was reading, I could picture this book being read in elementary and middle schools as part of their reading curriculum. It had that kind of feel to it, which is saying a lot. I can easily see Wonder Show becoming a classic novel for young readers. This story felt magical to me.

Characters & Plot: The setting for this story is very unusual. I'm so use to reading books that are set in modern times that I really enjoyed the Depression Era setting for Wonder Show. It really made the entire book come to life, and as I said before, the descriptions of the setting and the events were beautifully done.

The plot centers around Portia, a young girl that is full of life and imagination. She is a wonderful storyteller, a gift that she inherited from her family.

Portia Remini grows up next door to boisterous relatives who entertain her with their stories. Her mother is long gone, but she can count on her dad, Max, to take care of her. Then one day he leaves her with her Aunt Sophia, who finds Portia too much to handle and drops her off at a home for wayward girls run by Mister, a cold-hearted man who uses the girls to sew uniforms and work in his apple orchard. When things at the home go from bad to worse, Portia rides away on a stolen bicycle and joins the Wonder Show, a traveling carnival of "freaks." As they crisscross the Midwest, she dreams of finding her father in the crowd.

WONDER SHOW is divided into three parts. The first is Portia's life before the carnival, and the second and third are her life at the carnival and beyond. There's nothing wrong with that, but the shift between the first and second parts was abrupt and somewhat jarring. Also, it was hard to keep track of the large cast of characters at the carnival. Still, this novel gives an interesting look into the lives of people who made a living by being different. For lovers of historical fiction and circus stories.

Wonder Show is a YA that doesn't read like it means to teach teenagers something they don't want to hear. The story of a girl who seems to lose everything during the journey from child to teen, but escapes the limits of her world to find sanctuary in a very unlikely place, it kept my interest until the end. Ms. Barnaby inserts occasional narratives from characters other than the protagonist, and that keeps things interesting. I wish the conclusion was a little more balanced in length with the lead in, but other than that it was great.

Portia is a storyteller. She takes her favorite tales and makes them her own. Prince Charming marries the Wicked Stepmother and the enchanted princess falls for the villainous wolf. In a story, anything can happen. Portia only wishes that her life were like a story and that someday soon her father would return for her and they would live happily ever after. But if her life is a story, it becomes more like a horror story than a fairytale when her aunt Sophie sends her to live at McGreavey's Home for Wayward Girls. A lifeless, hopeless place, run by the terrible Mister, who will never let them leave again. But then something occurs that launches Portia into action - she runs away and joins the circus. Or more specifically, she finds herself working for the Wonder Show - also known as the freak show. There, normal is weird, and Portia must work to gain acceptance and perhaps even... a family.

I picked up this book because I had recently read The Night Circus (which I absolutely loved and highly recommend). I knew this was going to be different, and I didn't once find myself comparing it to The Night Circus. It is a completely different type of story... one I wasn't particularly fond of. Portia seemed a decent character, but I just couldn't bring myself to care about her. The other characters, the freaks and normals of the Wonder Show, were each different, but I neither cared for nor was particularly interested in any of them. I think that this book does a good job of capturing the Wonder Show and their life behind the scenes, and perhaps that is what threw me off. This book is just not very positive.
