There's a lot of potential for just enjoying but also teaching with this book in the primary and intermediate grades. Jenkins leads with a strong main idea, "Many creatures have a nose, mouth, eyes, features, or some other part that looks odd, silly, or even frightening. But these unusual features are there for a reason. In some way, they help these animals survive." This intro could be posted and as you read aloud or students engage in reading about each animal, they could return to these posted sentences and discuss how the page they just read (illustration and text) applies to that particular animal.

That said- there's a reason why I only gave this four stars--there's one page that does not align with this main idea -- the page about the blobfish (late in the book). On the two-page spread, the left hand page has the text "Dear blobfish: What on earth happened to you?" with an illustration of a flattened-looking blobfish that spreads across to the second page. Then the text on the second page (written from the fish's perspective) states: "Being on dry land-instead of in the ocean is my problem. At home, deep in the sea, I look like just another fish. But I'm out of the water, and gravity is smushing me. Here's what I usually look like:" and then there's an illustration of a well-adjusted blobfish. For me, this doesn't reveal the idea that a particular feature helps this animal survive. I'm not even sure what Jenkins is trying to get at. Maybe if you fish and catch a blobfish, gravity will make it look funny????

BUT this is not a deal breaker...this is a challenge in the text for students to grapple with. I'd ask, "Does this page fit or not?" and have them discuss in small groups why or why not.

This is a wonderful book for kids. Very fun to figure out why animals have certain colorations or features. Super well written but short and to the point.
