The author and illustrator of Bob and Flo shares her creative process and the story behind these two adorable characters.
Bob and Flo's Story

Bob and Flo’s story all began with this scruffy sketch of two penguins I made a long time ago. |
Some years later I started to play with these penguins again, using different materials and styles. |
I’m a big fan of puppetry, so that played a part in the way I developed the characters. As penguins, it seemed suitable that they should communicate in a gentle way, with very little facial expression and lots of physical movement. |
Finally, I came up with these two friends… a girl and a boy. They were toddlers. Once I knew that they would be doing things that toddlers do, the story felt like it wrote itself; a first day at preschool. .. and a missing lunchbox (a bucket of course!). |

Here’s one of the first roughs – before I had realised they should be in an actual kindergarten. |
The final style uses a mixture of drawing, collaged papers and print. I wanted it to look almost as if the penguins had made the illustrations! Here’s Flo, with a selected colour palette, which was adapted from the original colour sketches. |
Here’s Bob’s train – I used building blocks as stamps. |
Last but not least, what should I call them? The story seemed to be about the ebbs and flows of life and penguins ‘bob and flow’ about in the water. Thus ‘Bob and Flo’ were born! |
