My three copies of "Wacky New Animals" arrived today. Absolutely love it (already need to order more)!! My favorite critters are the 22 inch megastick (that's a BIG bug!), and the see through frog (incredible photo!!), but the TWO INCH nose leech (gross!) is sure to be a favorite of kids. Ha! Congrats to the author on another terrific book; she must have had a blast doing the research as her enthusiasm shines throughout. Keep `em coming!

You can't make this stuff up: A huge worm that captures its prey by shooting out goo from under its neck, weaving a web over a cricket; a transparent frog whose heart you can see beating; a newly-discovered species of leech found up a little girl's nostril--and more.

Montgomery's engaging writing style keeps the reader turning the pages, and she weaves in science so skilfully that a child won't even notice it. The long list of acknowledgments at the end shows how many scientists contributed their knowledge.

The photographs are breathtaking and are well chosen to highlight what's interesting about the new creature (the hot pink of a millipede, the tininess of a chameleon perched on a fingertip, etc.) and the layout is jazzy yet clear.

The author's website (http://heatherlmontgomery.com/) shows that she is an award-winning nature educator. If this book is an example of her teaching style, that award is well deserved.

This book is easy to read and inviting. Like a magazine, you can flip it open to any page and find a short, lively description and photo of an animal that you've never heard of. Weird animals with neon coloration or nutty habits. Eye-popping animals that make you giggle. You'll want to grab a friend and share what you've read. You'll want to show off what you learned at the dinner table, especially when the animal has gross habits or superpowers!

Montgomery makes science an ongoing, real-life adventure - a thrilling ride full of delightful possibilities. This is the perfect book to leave on a classroom reading shelf, in a waiting room - anywhere a young reader can "happen" upon it. Grab a copy, strap on your seat belts, prepare for a rollicking read!

Well written animal descriptions with interesting facts that will capture the attention of children. Interesting references were made to the researchers/discoverers of these animals. The interesting context of the discoveries (sometimes accidental) were described - children were sometimes involved in the discoveries, too. These are nice connections that encourage kids' interest in pursuing science and that show them the benefit of practicing their observational skills.

The animals in book are nicely varied: insects, fish, worms, primates, and others. Adults will enjoy it, too.

The book was organized well, and it's graphic design is excellent. Super photographs. Typical of the great quality we have come to expect from Scholastic products.
