I am a school librarian and I read this to my fifth grade students and they loved it. I had them write the letter that one of the brothers is holding while he is away at war. I found video of the brothers playing baseball on youtube and shared it with the class while they were selecting books. I also research which brothers were still alive and shared that with them. They didn't like that the youngest brother died before some of the older brothers. I even emailed the author to tell her how much I loved her book.

This fun, true story is a huge hit with the little ball players in my home and with friends who come over to play. You know a book is good when an eight year old stops running around with his pals and sits happily for twenty minutes reading! The fun details of the players ages, names, highs and lows and (one brother hit home runs into the Atlantic Ocean, another looked like he was posing for a baseball card when he was up to bat, etc) have made an impression on my son. The Accera's image of loving, busy family life anchored in a love of baseball makes this a new favorite of mine, too.

This charming book is a treasure. It tells the amazing true story of a 12-brother team that played for years in local team competitions that were common in the early part of the 20th Century. Their play was interrupted by WWII, when six of the brothers served; they all returned home safely to play more ball!. At one time, the oldest brother was 32, the youngest seven. Brother teams were not that unusual in that era of large families...there are 29 recorded baseball teams made up entirely of brothers, and some of these other teams are featured in other baseball books for kids. But this team, the Acerra Brothers, is the only one in Baseball's Hall of Fame, and they were the longest-playing of them all. Seven of the brothers were still alive in 1997, when their team was honored at an induction ceremony in Cooperstown, which they attended, (along with hundreds of relatives & a still-living sister). I don't think I've ever enjoyed a children's book as much as this, or had such happy anticipation in the delight it will give my baseball-loving grandson!

It isn't often that I learn about a family baseball team. I can recall some music groups that were related like The Lennon Sisters from the Lawrence Welk Show. Also I can remember The Mcguire Sisters, a trio of ladies who made it big on the Arthur Geoffrey talent show. Others come to my mind like The Everly Brothers. But never did I know about a family baseball team until I read this book.
The Acerra family had 16 children of which 12 were boys who loved to play baseball. To have so many boys in the same family with an interest in baseball is surely a miracle. And so back to this story. Nine boys on the playing field while three kept the bench warm. Then, in the rotation during a game everybody got a chance to play baseball. While large families were popular in the 1930's, how many families do you know of that comprised an entire baseball roster? I don't know of any. And they supported each other which is a mark of good sportsmanship.
Audrey Vernick is a great storyteller, and along with Steven Salerno's great vintage-style art, all the kids will love reading this action-packed, drama about an exciting baseball family baseball team. It's a true story brought to life that I encourage every kid to read and I give it five stars. Marvin P. Ferguson, author of BOYS ON THE GOLD COAST.

My boys (8 & 6) LOVE this book. It's a true story. We passed a WWII monument the other day and the younger one asked if it was an Acerra brother. I had no clue what he was talking about. "You know mom, one of the baseball brothers who went to war!" That tells me it's a great book!

This captivating book has been described in full detail in other reviews and the illustrations covered in the quote from Horn Book in editorial reviews, so I will just say that Brothers at Bat is a lively look at how we think America was and should be. Playing for fun, love of the game, and loyalty, not millions of dollars is its theme. I just purchased this for an avid Phillies fan as a retirement present. Not for kids only!

Can you imagine an entire baseball team just made up of brothers? Neither could my son until we read this book together. Brothers at Bat tells the unbelievable tale about 12 brothers who played on the same baseball team for decades. Through injuries, war and children, these brothers stayed together and always put each other first.

I love that the book showed how they lived (all 12 in one room!) as well as the fact that the world sometimes kept them apart. And despite having fun, one of the brothers is injured. It brings the fact that this is a real story home.

The brothers’ love of the game is rather infectious. Despite the current snow outside, it made me want to grab my mitt and go throw the ball for a while with my kiddo. This book is a home run for any child that enjoys sports and in particular baseball.

There are so few stories told with more than 2 children, maybe 3 in the children's book arena. This one tops the chart. And it is a true story...it's like finding gold dust. :)
