I was immediately interested in the book HILLBILLY HEART by Billy Ray Cyrus as soon as I heard about it. He has lived a life that I believe exemplifies what it means to work hard and see it pay off for you in a very big way. The book was everything I hoped it would be and more---and for that reason I think it is will be a testament of what is possible for people around the world.

Cyrus takes us into his humble beginnings and how music was the saving grace that took him from where he was, if only for the moment. He knew its power early on, and because he was true to it and respected it, he was able to use it to create a name and brand for himself. In the book we are able to see how it all really starts. He talks about having success as a ball player and the opportunities that it offered. There was something else, though, that was calling to him. He heard "the voice" letting him know what would be his destiny. "Buy a guitar and start a band," it told him, and it was those words that would ignite the passion that eventually made him a household name.

Through music he opened the door for his success in the entertainment industry. Through television others would be able to know him and his family. HILLBILLY HEART takes you into it all, through the discovery and fame that would find his daughter Miley Cyrus, and the scandals that would erupt from time to time, threatening the family's relationships.

In the end, regardless how well-known he was becoming or how much fame he had, Billy Ray Cyrus wanted to stay true to the principles that led him to music in the first place. He wanted to be himself, even if that wasn't the person everyone else wanted to see at the time.

Reflective and honest in its approach, HILLBILLY HEART is the story of a dream fulfilled and a life lived in the spotlight and how you can be yourself in spite of it all. This is book that speaks to the heart and the ability we all have to use our gifts to change the world.

This is such a candid look at Billy Ray's life, from his struggles as a teen through becoming a music senstaion while raising a family and trying to keep them centered in a life of faith and devotion. It will pull at your heart and make you realize anything is possible with faith. He is a great man, father, and Christian. A Great biography all teens should have to read. I am adding it to my homeschool reading list for my teen.

The book very hard to put down! Easy to read and compelling.
Getting to see into Billy Ray Cyrus's heart and his family, all the hard work, adventures and motivations in his life was fascinating and gave me a lot of respect for him. It's full of lessons in being true to your heart, standing up for yourself, and never giving up.

"Hillbilly Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus and Todd Gold takes us on a journey through Billy Ray's life. From his turbulent, broken home boyhood days through his rebellious prankster days up to the Billy Ray Cyrus of today.

Billy comes from a long line of men who hear voices telling them things. And when he heard a voice telling him get himself a guitar and form a band, well, what else could he do? Buy a left handed guitar!

His life story is one of ups and downs from deep down disappointments and over the top successes. Definitely an inspiring story that will have you singing his songs before the end of the book. If you aren't putting on a CD, downloading some Billy Ray Cyrus tunes, or searching for his videos on YouTube, well, you'd better call 911 and see if they have an achy breaky heart defibrillator to get you going!

First of all, I like Billy Ray Cyrus. Take away all the hokey-pokey and
1990's mullet and you have a genuine salt-of-the-earth-guy who can sing
and write music. . . However, these good qualities don't add up to a worthy
memoir. His writing is clunky at best, and his tales don't have the depth
or zip to keep this well-meaning narrative moving along.

Billy Ray Cyrus' autobiography was, as the title of this review says, a strangely compelling read. It is simply a compelling read, and not one I expected to be nearly as interesting. The tone and pacing were very well established and drove the narrative along so well that I was halfway through the book before I realized it. It's not the usual self-aggrandizing fluff that most autobiographies tend to be. It's a surprisingly honest reflection of how Mr. Cyrus remembers his career and in a very relatable and conversational tone.

Mr. Cyrus covers everything from his rise in the country music scene, his transition into other media (such as TV), recreational use of marijuana, his family interactions, and much more. I fully expected him to gloss over much of the controversies and media that have occasionally probed into his family life. Instead, he seems very candid when addressing those personal issues and states his feelings quite plainly.

Naturally, he does mention his famous daughter and their relationship. He doesn't mention the other children quite as much, but that is probably because they aren't as in the spotlight. I had to assume that he was either trying to protect them to some degree or the editor cut those parts out. Still, none of this seemed to be for shameless self promotion. It was more like any other parent talking about what their kids were doing.

As autobiographies go, this is one of the best I've ever read. I wasn't bored and I learned quite a bit about Mr. Cyrus that I didn't know before. With a career as varied and long as his, I'd recommend this book not just for fans of country music, but also for fans of entertainment history. I found it to be a well-paced book that didn't leave me bored and I learned a lot. That's generally a good accomplishment when people are talking about themselves.
