I cannot praise too highly this prequel to Stage Blood, which I have yet to read. A multilayered account of an Aussie thesp's slow-burn career and his emotional/intellectual life that was thirty years in the making and remaking, it's the quality of the writing, including its counterintuitive, not wholly chronological structure, that lifts this above the usual theatrical candyfloss (cotton candy). The Australian chapters are particularly revelatory even if, like me, you've no interest in that country. Like Paul Theroux's Great Railway Bazaar I was nearly put off by the first, jocular chapter: persist!

Having worked with Mr. Blakemore years ago and having also read his other pieces, I was truly excited to see what '"Arguments with England" would bring. I was not disappointed. He is as wonderful a writer as he is a director and curling up with this book was like having a private audience with a gent you can only admire and respect more each time you meet him, whether in person or in the pages of a book.
