I am a pediatrician, so I have a professional vestment in parenting books in addition to raising my own children. Children feel more secure when they know the limits of acceptable behavior. This book tells you how to stop arguing or lecturing and instead establish clear rules with consequences. This is a popular theme in many of the current parenting books such as the "Love and Logic" books by Jim and Charles Fay. Family Rules is very well organized, easy to read, and gives many practical examples. I believe this book is out of print but I'm hoping this review will revive an interest in it.

This is an excellent book for the subject, well written, thorough and it covers all views on setting rules within the family. The reason that I gave it three stars is that I don't believe it is a primary subject on raising children and I would not recommend it for new parents. I believe there are other areas that parents need to cover for their babies/toddlers/children before setting rules. As for that area, which will be eventually unavoidable this is the most holistic guide that I have come across. It will help all parents to review their discipline and home rules, especially those in peril with their "difficult" children, as well as those with older ones that have missed the crucial first years and messed things up. Parents are to be blamed NOT children and considering that "What's been done is done" this is a good guide on how to amend certain things.

I'm a family counselor and have been using this book in my practice over the last 20 years: Family Rules is never out of date. I'm so glad that the book has been republished, I've been purchasing any used one I could find to give to my clients who struggle to raise motivated, responsible, well adjusted children. This book is clear and concise and helps parents design consequences for unacceptable behavior that help the child learn rather than simply punish. The book is positive and very easily understood. I highly, highly recommend it.

Excellent book. All parenting involves a complex balance between giving our kids unconditional love, acceptance, and encouragement, but also providing limits, rules, and consequences for unacceptable as well as good behavior. Kaye understands this balance well. He states that the love, acceptance, and building self-esteem must come first, it is the foundation on which everything else is built. Based on my own experience as parent and teacher, I really agree with this, and he develops the how-to's of this foundation of love and acceptance very well, with practical examples. He also doesn't shy away from understanding that all kids will test limits, and that as part of being loving parents, you have to set clear limits and be ready to follow through with consequences. Some books seem to veer too far toward a very authoritarian, even harsh approach; other books seem to blame the parent a lot and suggest that just being nicer to your kid will solve all behavioral problems. This book is more holistic and balanced, incorporating both sides of the balance in a thoughtful way.
