A little over a month ago I received my copy of Resurrection After Rape. In the time since then, I have worked some of the journal assignments and have seen more progress towards recovery than I have since I was first diagnosed with PTSD 10 years ago. This is an amazing book, written by someone who understands the trauma of rape & sexual abuse, who understands the ways that trauma affects the victim's life. Matt leads you through steps towards recovery with understandable explanations of what is going on in your head and with journal assignments designed to really help you deal with your trauma and get past it to live again. I recommend this book to any victim of rape or sexual abuse. It has changed my life. I am no longer a victim.

I've been working with the book for three days with a journal to keep all my thoughts and activities in, and I feel a million times better. The day after I started it, I could sense a change in my personality and my confidence. Just deciding that I wanted to recover was a big change, and this book is an EXCELLENT guide. I've kept all of my experiences inside for twelve years, and I think I'm absolutely ready to be relieved of the weight and the pain. This book is very good, and I recommend it to any survivor of rape or molestation.

This book is by far the best I have read in the recovery of my own rape. This is also a wonderful book for Rape Trauma counselors/therapists to have for reference, it is just absolutely amazing. It is work but well worth it. I wish you all a safe journey to survivor-hood; it's a rough path at times but we can all make it.

This work employs the word 'transformation' in it's title, and, if trasformation from the worst that rape leaves us with is what you envision, then, you have come to the right place. I have read, and digested; devoured the words and assignments in this book, and I have grown and, yes, I believe transformed from my work with this book. It is filled with assignments and exercises that stimulate the victim of rape to dig past victimhood, and pursue with fervor, survivorhood. Through the masterful insights of the author, and some very sensitive and heart-rending exercises, (like, writing a letter to the day before), the reader is moved, spiritually and emotionally, to push past the pain of rape, and find the joy of being resurrected to a life free of self-doubt, shame, self-blame, and even self-injury. Matt Atkinson has a gift with this type of therapy, and he makes recovery from the ravages of rape finally feel accessible. Phenomenal, simply phenomenal!

I was fortunate enough to meet Matt at a very low point in my life. I hated everything about myself. I frequently injured myself and could not maintain healthy relationships. I ended up in treatment as a last ditch effort to save myself. The experience was truly transformative. While Matt showed me how to do the work, I was the one who actually had to do it. The processes discussed in this book are not easy. However, in the long run, I am a better person now for having confronted the trauma I had experienced and learning to process in a healthy way.

I say this book is important not only because it's important to heal from rape, but because it addresses many rape myths and gives a very clear picture of what to expect during recovery. I think many people turn away from healing when times get tough. If I had a nickle for every time I heard, "I thought your therapist was supposed to help you feel BETTER, not worse" I'd have some cash on hand! Rape recovery is different than marital counseling, substance abuse therapy, or any other kind of therapy. It's a unique process... one in which not a large number of psychologists/therapists/counselors are trained to handle. That poses a unique problem for the survivor. Where do you go for help when you don't know what effective help looks like? This book will help you. When you don't know where to turn after a hard session and you don't understand why the hurt gets worse before it gets better, this will gently explain and then help with suggestions to cope. It is helpful if you are working with a therapist, but also is beneficial for someone just looking for answers and support.

When I started to read RaR, I was amazed. I was so awestruck with the insight to my perceptions, that I took a highlighter and just highlighted everything I felt pertained to me. After only 3 pages I stopped. I stopped because it was getting rediculous! The highlighted portions were far more than those lines I left unmarked. This was not all for not... I looked back at those pages and it was then I realized just how NOT alone I was. For me, that's what this book has helped to do. Bring me back into the community of people I had stepped away from and recognize that it was up to me to take this place that I'm in and make a road out of it. The road doesn't end, but it gets less rocky!!! And the winding, bumpy path behind is not gone, just incorporated. All of course, with hard work!

Losing your way in the process of healing after rape is likely to happen. Spending hours on-line, reaching for answers and finding pieces of truth and healing when you are hurt can lead many to go deeper into the belief they are alone and not able to be fully understood. This book breaks the code. The author is able to take the experiences of many, and artfully and compassionately weave that with his own extensive expertise to form a work that speaks to the commonality of experience amongst women who have been raped - while not undervaluing the importance of how unique and individual this experience is to the person who endures it. Although this book has as it's underpinning a deep understanding, insight, and compassion for survivors, he remains vigilant in insisting that we find our own strength through this work and break free from being victims and move to being empowered. He shares exactly how to do that. I had read many articles, books, and forums looking for exactly what I found here: a comprehensive, insightful, and ultimately healing look into the chaos of my inner emotional world after rape. What I found here was the feeling that someone else understood and could effectively provide actionable steps that would help guide through what had always before seemed something too daunting to tackle. This book led me back to my inner strength. It is not only genuinely helpful, it is an amazing gift for anyone searching for true healing.
