Michael Whitworth has done it again. This volume is the third in his series of companion guides to books of the Bible, following Epic of God for Genesis and Derision of Heaven for Daniel. These guides meet a need in Christian writing: they are more substantive than most Sunday School guides and more accessible than most worthwhile commentaries. I can recommend these books as great reading for anyone who wants to get to know one of the Biblical books a little bit better.

Living and Longing is timely. It’s always tempting for an author to spend 300 pages chasing rabbits and 0 pages actually challenging his readers, but Michael doesn’t fall into that trap. He does indulge our curiosity and spends some time on some of the curiosities (e.g., the man of lawlessness, holy kisses, etc.), but he makes sure these side trails bring us home to the main point.

I tend to think of 1 and 2 Thessalonians as eschatological books, but Living and Longing really brings out the practical, daily living lessons from the book. He refuses to divorce the hereafter from the here-and-now.

Even when dealing with the difficult topic of God’s wrath, Michael does a good job of keeping us grounded in the lessons we each need.

My plan for Living and Longing is to spread out a few copies among our members before teaching a class or preaching a series on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, and then get feedback from the readers. I then incorporate their feedback into my preaching. I’ve found that to be a helpful way to enrich my teaching on the text, and get a few more people involved in detailed study.

I’d definitely recommend Living and Longing for anyone wanting to know more about these books or who wants to deepen their faith.

Living & Longing for the Lord is written in an engaging style, quipped with personal stories and humor. I really enjoyed Michael Whitworth's writing style. I also appreciated his guidelines for doing the study, recommending a full read of the book (1 Thes., for example), then a read of the focus verse, then reading the section on that verse (those verses) in Living & Longing, and then a reread of the verse.

Whitworth is clear in his material presentation, and at the same time puts the responsibility on the reader not to think of Whitworth's words as Gospel truth or as spoken from God. The reader must take the responsibility to "examine all things carefully, and cling to that which is true." His writing style encourages me to slow down and examine what I am reading, to mull it over and consider it more fully. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and intend to revisit it in the future.

The book is divided into ten chapters, each chapter covering to or three scripture sections, followed by "Talking Points". It seems ideal for either personal Bible study or small group use. Consider this book for your personal use. I don't think you will regret it. I don't.

This book is well-written with a great deal of valuable information. It does, however, seem to lack some depth, and I think that is by the nature of the structure of the book. A full 28% is bibliographic documentation, which should tell you how much of the other 72% is cited information. (Thanks, Kindle, for this math.) That means in addition to studying the Biblical text, interpreting the author's words, and chewing on the cited materials, there are more than 400 other texts which any good reader will now want to investigate, to determine their worthiness as sources. Which turns this into a very long and involved study. Had the author written more of his own words, I think I could dive into the text and into this book and worked my way out through truth. Since he chose to throw in those extra hundreds of sources, I now have to figure out how much value / credibility to give to each one of those before I can make an informed decision on the worth of the information. Quite frankly, who has the time?

It's a good study of the letters to the Thessalonians. It contains some valuable information for those just looking for a starting point. But for those who are really diving in and looking for the in-depth material, it's more a study of sources than of Scripture, which made it a little tedious for me. Still enjoyed the reading.

Michael Whitworth’s study on 1-2 Thessalonians serves as a healthy reminder for every Christian to “live” and “long” for the eschaton. I am recommending this study for three reasons. First, the book is useful. Living and Longing for the Lord is not overbearing in length (less than $200 pages) or price (less than $15). Furthermore, the book is designed primarily for Christian readers who are striving to delve into the context and content of 1-2 Thessalonians just enough to draw a practical application. The “talking points” at the end of each chapter are helpful in this regard too. The book does a good job of bringing the divide that often exists between exegesis and application.

Secondly, the book is very personal. This book does not have the feel of a mere academic textbook. The stories and reflections from Michael’s life provide powerful illustrations as readers walk through the text of the Thessalonian epistles. On several occasions I was moved by Michael’s honest reflections about his father, his ministry, and his struggle to live up to the call of the Gospel. Furthermore, Michael engages readers with an eye on the practical. His relevant, up-to-date illustrations and occasional humor helps to make his points stick.

Finally, I appreciated how Michael’s work points readers to a larger conversation. For example, there are 430+ footnotes in the 193 pages of the work. Michael interacts with a number of well-known commentaries, Greek and text-criticism handbooks, primary sources from ancient Greco-Roman settings, and even resources respected and loved by members of the churches of Christ in an effort to show what others have said about the text of 1-2 Thessalonians as he leads readers to engage the text for themselves.
