Editorial Reviews

Review

"[This material] is absolutely essential to any understanding of the twentieth century, and I am delighted to see it included. The 'Titanic' vignette that begins the chapter is apt and useful-it is a good metaphor for the century and fixes attention well. ... The content in this chapter is well presented, reasonable, and readable. It significantly improves the quality of the book and makes it more usable than was the earlier edition. The impact of industrialization, the growth of mass society, the growing power differences between the core and periphery-these are all treated well, and they provide the background needed to understand why 1914 occurred at all and how it created the consequences that flowed from it." -- Review --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says, July 6, 2008
By Jeffrey Shek (Waltham, MA) - See all my reviews

Had to pick this book up for a History class, and the book certainly does what it says it will.

The book does do quite well though managing to keep the topics interesting ... even when the reader may not be the most enamored with its reading. Which is a difficult task for any historical textbook, especially dealing with college students!

However, for a quick brush up on reading, or for any average reader looking to gain some insight into this time period, I'd certainly recommend it. I have an above average interest with history, so I enjoyed the book immensely. Some of other college friends .. not so much. (Bear in mind, they are in college).

I've picked it back up a few times and done a few reads over it to brush up on history. It's detailed enough, without flooding the reader with too many facts. All in all, a praiseworthy textbook.
